ASSIGNMENT OO

Whenever I get stuck or frustrated with my work, I go back to the question- "What do you want?" I've crafted the assignment below for those of you who truly want to dig deep into this course. This assignment is not for the timid. I am certain that it will help you by learning to help yourself.

What do you want?

From your job? From this book? From your spouse? From your classes? From your life? From yourself?

Four simple words. Yet for many of us, this is the question of all questions. In our answer, we unlock our ambitions, passion, purpose, fears, opportunities, free will- and we clarify our desires. For most of us, this answer is elusive, as we continue to change and evolve in a world that continues to change and evolve. We are prone to distraction. Easily-awed. Born tragic. This question will test the boundaries of your imagination against the limits of your life. We have to learn to give ourselves permission to dream again. Big ideas need oxygen and the spark of hope if they are to catch fire.

Purge Paper

Without your personal story, the following lessons are nothing more than empty scaffolding. It’s critical because it’s all about you. This is the purge paper. It’s a soul-scouring exercise to get to the heart of what drives you. It’s a crude name, but the effort that you pour into this exercise warrants a little theater and the time to see it through. I’d suggest flipping to the last page of your journal, rotating it 180 degrees, and writing from the back cover in. This will keep your writing away from prying eyes. Through this exercise in self-reflection, you are looking to unearth a bit of brutal honesty- to get to the heart of who you are. You’ll recognize the simple truth when you see it. Don’t hold back anything relevant in this confessional. Above all, do not share it with anyone else. Doing so will cause you to pause and to edit. This has to be as real as it gets.

In your journal write until you answer the question “what do you want?” Dig deep into your personal history. “Why do you want it?” Identify those pivotal moments and emotions that serve as emotional motivators and triggers. Reframe them as assumptions vs. validations. Why do you do what you do? When did you first identify as an artist?

Through an understanding of our individual genesis of identity- that moment when you first realized who you were, we are capable of defining not only what we want and need, but also those things that we won’t tolerate. This gives us powerful tools in personal motivation and intentional direction as you set out to combat your insecurities and doubt. With enough practice, you’ll be damn near bulletproof.

  • Length- Undetermined- as many pages as it takes.

  • Time- As long as it takes. I suggest giving yourself a window of 2-3 uninterrupted hours.
