Kristian Nee interviews me about my career, and what I think it takes to learn painting well.

Just want to say this interview is so full of wisdom and practically that it's one of the very best interviews I've ever heard. Thank you Morgan! I bought your course last year. I've been painting for 50 years, so yeah - I'm older now. I have been primarily painting landscapes recently, but I do love painting portraits, and am looking forward to "painting without a brain".

My try with this one. Was way easier to approach this one after all the other demos. I have a hard time when I'm continuing on a already dried painting (2-3 day break). In materials list Morgan you mention this: "I also use Grumbacher Damar Retouch Varnish gloss— I spray this on my painting if I am going to paint over dry parts of my painting from previous days. I couldn’t exist without this product." What does this actually do? I dont think you touched on it in the demos, or if you did I missed it :) Thanks a lot and huge thanks for the whole course!

when a couple days go by, the darker areas will oxidize and dry out lighter than when you first put down the paint. the retouch varnish brings it back to the correct value.

Also it was easier to sit here and watch this interview instead of mixing my next set of skin tones. Lol

Great interview — thank you! I agree that it would be so helpful to see a course demonstrating different starting methods according to the total time allotment for a given sketch or painting. Also could relate to the endlessly taking classes instead of moving forward into real life art challenges. It’s easier and more fun to take a class; taking on a commission for a client is challenging and often not fun. But I have probably learned more from the latter because I am forced to put every skill into practice and be a “professional.’

Hello Morgan, I tried a bit of choppier look with this one (after your comments about calligraphy of strokes) and tried to get a bit looser rather than smoothed out. Such a great fun photo to paint. Thank you!

Good job! Some of your areas are a little out of value but overall you have it. See if you can find any halftones that might be too dark. and find any reflected lights that might be too light.
