@Morgan Weistling may I ask, is the gray what you use most commonly to tone canvases in your work or simply what you thought would make the learning process most accessible for us? I assume that you would tone canvases differently depending on the subject or desired effect, but I'm curious if there is a favorite choice you make when something else isn't called for... And could you share what would cause you to choose a different solution? Thank you for your time!

You are correct I don’t always do the same thing. And you are correct that starting with a mid tone gray on your canvas makes it easier for everybody. I still do it sometimes though I try to keep it a little lighter. Lately I haven’t been toning the canvas at all. I do my drawing and then I add some value to it with burnt umber let that dry. After it is dry I then do some color washes in oil to establish color areas sooner and then let that dry. That step is very messy and bleeds colors into one another and is not at all clean looking. After that is dry, which takes a couple days I didn’t start finishing as I go.

Getting some canvases primed. I did put a little black acrylic into the gesso to make a grey. It is very light, so will go back after it dries and do the toned wash with acrylic. I have some aluminum angle iron strips I use as risers.

As I understood I have to put acrylic primer then acrylic gesso white not clear or both are the same cause unfortunately this is the first time I know abut acrylic primer and acrylic gesso
Hey there, apologies for perhaps stating the obvious but when you say buy "acrylic primed," I had a moment of confusion becuase most canvases I see say "acrylic gesso primed." So my takeaway is you reccomend putting gesso on top of these "acrylic gesso primed" canvases?

acrylic is gesso. so yes, acrylic gesso primed. most cheap canvas is exactly that.
hello is it ok to use sanding paper to get even a smoother surface i saw one artist making their canvas that way. they sand it and apply then a layer of gesso
Is it ok to use liquitex gray gesso and skip the white gesso?

yes, if you want more canvas texture then go ahead. Normally on portraits texture of canvas can be difficult to fight.
