Hi! I have a question. Does this kind of set up defeat the purpose of the exercise? Does this become “sight sizing” instead of comparative measurement? If, so how would you recommend I place the reference? Just make it a bit larger/smaller to practise scaling?

Yay managed to catch up a bit in time to submit this one. Anyways, really find it hard to start the initial block in, figuring out those first marks, I always seem to get it wrong. Finally managed to get something that I'm ok with, gonna defo try some more of these though.

Not sure if i'm approaching this right but here's my assignment for level 1. I think i'm too used trying to find geometric shapes, will attempt this again with organic shapes in mind.

Some attempts at the buffalo. Like the one with more triangles even though squares feel more “heavy” and “stable”. 🐃

struggled a lot with the hippo until I realised that the open mouth could be a “bent triangle”. Very very useful exercise for me. So difficult to simplify. Will attempt the buffalo and some other animals tomorrow. 😅

Study of an ink drawing of another Swedish artist; "Lars Lerin". So fun to look at line work of your favourite artists.

Got attracted to the insane line work of the master "Anders Zorn" and tried it out! Fun but demoralizing at the same time. :D

A quick one to get started! Master study of John Bauer. This is so much fun! Love searching through my favorite art and noticing the line work in a way I have never done before. Will definately do more of these. :D

while doing these exercises I can notice slow but steady improvement in drawing with pencil/charcoal on a flat or tilted sketchbook, but when I try to paint standing with a vertical canvas I feel that I am still struggling with drawing just as much as before. Should I already try to adopt my drawing practise to better resemble the conditions I have when painting or is that practise better reserved for a later stage when I have the basics down? I am worried that I will get too used to drawing in a sketchbook and not being able to translate that to painting where I often have to hold a brush without support mid air.

I found this very difficult and frustrating. When I try to be confident I just get sloppy instead. Gah! Good exercise!

thank you Sarah! That is really encouraging to hear. Always good to get an outside view that is not connected to what you felt while drawing.

First pass at breaking the pear down. Not sure about the edges. Comments and critiques welcome and thank you.

Hi! I am just a beginner, but Stan tells us to practice trying to help others through critiques anyway. So here I go: , I think the shapes you found are good and I like the value change between lightest and midtone. The darkest dark looks a bit to messy both in value cover and shape design. Try making it more "flat" and avoid the fuzzy edges by making all shapes flat, more simple geometric forms.
