First I focused on the simple forms, precise measuring proportions etc., hoping to be able to draw from different angles. But I find it still very difficult to see.
Guess the only thing left to do is just draw. So here’s what I did: drawing Stan’s example a few times, then tried it on my own, then comparing and correcting.
Well, in the 3rd image the foot is still too long, but I think this study plan works for me. Will be doing this for a while.
Have a lovely weekend.

Really nice!
- Small suggestion: remember that the vertical lines are going down away from you, so it could be nice to converge them slightly for a stronger 3D-effect. You have this in your corrections applied -drawing, but just wanted to make you aware in case you didn't notice👍.
- "Guess the only thing left to do is just draw". Yeah, I think you're right. For me, learning the proportions hasn't been the main reason I learn to draw an object from imagination. They help me construct it, if I don't know what it looks like from a certain angle, and helps me check my work for error. But it doesn't give me that intuitive ability to just throw a foot down on the paper. For me the main solution has been practice. This procedure might help:
- Draw the object from imagination, from a chosen angle (maybe one you struggle with).
- Then check with the 3D-model and make corrections.
-Try again from imagination, from the same angle or a similar angle (a similar angle is familiar yet challenges you further. Doing the same angle might feel repetitive... or it might be good for you :) depending on your needs. )
One thing that helps me acquaint myself faster with a form, is to turn on that same empathy you use when you feel the pose as you do a gesture drawing: "How would it feel to point my foot like that?". You can also try to Imagine touching the object as you draw it. "What does it feel like?" Imagine grabbing it with your hands and rotating it around. Or imagine being it and moving around. It might sound a bit weird, but I think it helps. Really activates your imagination and intuition.
Hope this helps :) Have a nice weekend!
