Scale tracking was originally going to be part of the Measure Depth lesson group, but that lesson group was growing too big and we realized we wanted to have an assignment for scale tracking, so this will be a short lesson group with a few demos before we get into ellipses!
LESSON NOTES

What's in Premium?

We are looking at height tracking in your environments. I break down how Daniel Cherng uses this technique to populate his sci-fi factory scenes. You will learn how to establish the height of one character on a floor plan and run that measurement back to a vanishing point. This lets you keep your characters consistent no matter where they stand in the scene. If they move off that line, you can easily transfer their height across the floor. Finally, I give you an assignment to practice tracking character heights in your own drawings.

ASSIGNMENTS

For this assignment we will track character heights in an environment
Pick an environment. It can be a photo or a drawing, but ideally one you’re already invested in, like your dream studio or a world you’re building.

  1. Place a character in the scene and decide how tall they are.
  2. Run that height back to a vanishing point. Anyone standing on that line will be the same height.
  3. Put a few points on the floor where other characters might stand.
  4. For points off the line, slide the height measurement over, then adjust if the character is taller or shorter.

Post your drawing when you’re done!

Deadline - submit by November 8, 2026 for a chance to be in the critique video!
