Still life oil practice

So I keep practicing oil paints and this is my latest work. Any critique is welcome! Two things I'm most unhappy with is the doll (idk the highlight just doesn't work?) and the helmet looks a bit like it doesn't fit in the scene. Maybe I should have more background colour influence its left edge and add a stronger contact shadow. What do you think?

It's looking alright I guess... maybe the shape of the helmet isn't as "right"? looking a little bit tall? could use a more interesting angle I guess. Otherwise looking alright. One suggestion would be use a value gradient for the white part of the book, so it's brightest towards the center of the image and gradually loose that towards the edge, so the image doesn't look as flat.

Hey Jan, Looks like your getting a good feel for the medium. I think the helmet looks out of place because the highlight in it should be shinier than the pages of the books. The light reflecting off of that kind of material Would be brighter than those pages even though they are “white” pages. Add some occlusion shadows in between the top book and the top of the helmet and some more cast darker cast shadow as well and it will look much more realistic. The doll I think is a bit of the same if that is a plastic material it’s highlight should be brighter, maybe your colors got a bit muddy painting over the same spot too many times. I think the way you’ve rendered the books is great, the edges of the pages are awesome. I hope this helps.
