Took another crack at “Nicolai”. First did this over a year ago in the summer, I believe. Graphite 2h and 2B and white chalk on toned gray strathmore 400 paper.

Spent 4 hours on this, still lots of island hunting to do, but I’m not very happy with the egg itself. The shape of the egg is not round enough and the core shadow is too dark I think. Thankful for any advice

“Freedom To Haunt” inspired by Norman Rockwell’s Freedom From Want. Ended up being a great learning experience and exercise! A lot of fun.

Here is my simple AO study assignment done in graphite. J haven’t checked the solution yet, but I do feel confident in my thought process. the cube being close, (touching) the floor plane would be quite dark occlusion but with nothing else blocking ambient light from above, the side planes should stay fairly consistent. The planes in the indentation will likely receive less ambient light as they are in a tighter space exposed to less AL. Also the planes are much smaller therefore will appear to the eye to be darker relative the larger side planes. the cyclinder and the sphere were much simpler to think about, though I should check the solution before O get too confident….

Revised after going over the solution. In the box, I missed the cast shadows that are sort of tapered due to the multiple directions of light casting shadows from different angles. I also didn’t account for how much “coverage” AO contributes to the shadows. I’m glad this exercise revealed that me. Also so I can see it in life, I set up a test study subject at work where we have multiple light sources from high up ceiling lamps and skylights and windows as well as white peg board walls. You can see the shadows cast in multiple directions and the inside “walls” of the tape are quite dark.

I’m excited to check the “module 2 feedback”. Video and hopefully get all the corrections because I dont’t feel confident this is correct. Would appreciate any feedback on this assignment from anyone. I can tell this is a weakness for me at the moment, can’t wait to get a hang of identifying these factors well!

@Dorian Iten This already makes more sense, and after some thought and doing it again I feel much more confident with my 2nd attempt and the reasons why I chose to label things the way I did. But I still have some questions . I think I’m gathering that this is a bit of a balance of using what you see (or think you see) and using your brain and thinking, “well if this surface may appear similar value, but knowing there is 1 light source and the angle of it compared to this other plane, they both can’t be center light.” Based on your assignment reviews there doesn’t seem to be 1 absolute correct view but that there is room for artist interpretation. I understand that in creating we group things together on purpose and make design choices, I am just curious if it is more exact than that or not. For instance, is the “solution mod factor” file you posted the closest to true or is there slight argument for some of the subtleties? I apologize for the wordiness and Thank you. I feel like I am finding weaknesses in my drawing already!

The angles I drew from and the angles of the photos are a little bit off. Also, I just had a bit of trouble drawing in the dark. In any case, I think I got the terminators and cast shadows identified correctly.

Nice job on the tougher subjects especially in the dark. I’m not certain, but it looks like there might be a bit of that light touching the back right “windows”. If you included those little touches of light it would probably add some more dimensionality to the drawing. They also might just be some reflecting lights or tricks of the camera, I can’t tell exactly. Terminators and shadows all look correct to me though god work

Terminator study assignment. The perspective and drawing aren’t the same as my subject’s poses but I tried match the light direction and terminator placement best I could. I don’t always feel certain that what I’m interpreting as the terminator isn’t just the dark halftones.
