Journey 2 - Bean Critiques
1yr
@silentmoonss
Hey guys it’s me again and I’m back with another weekly update. So I’ve been having difficulties tackling the torso as those of whom looked at my journey 1 post gave me critiques regarding it being too small and I’ve decided to make that( along with balance) my goal to conquer. so here I am doing the bean method. I would say that the bean method actually helps me get a very good grasp of the torso and made it easier in drawing some poses. However I’ve been having difficulties actually establishing the bean itself and had to erase multiple times until it looked like a bean and at least KINDA looked like the pose. I took some advice from someone online who told me to not draw from figures yet and just focus on trying to do the basic concepts: tilt, lean, twist ect. So these are what I have so far. Please I would much appreciate some tips and advice and also some references if possible.

Please provide reference photos next to the bean drawing so we could see if you are describing the pose correctly. Otherwise they look fine, just keep doing more of them. And work on you line quality. Sometimes you have too many dominant lines especially when drawing full figure. Hope it helps.

I agree with @Jesper Axelsson , I think these look pretty good. They have a nice dimensional feel to them, and they have forced you to really see the pinch and stretch, as well as the twist. Nice work :)

Hi @silentmoonss, looks to me like you're doing great! Good gesture and form. I would say, move on to the next lesson👍 -I was about to give a tip on the overlaps, but then when I reached the last image, I noticed that you already discovered it; the overlaps follow the gesture. I had a hard time grasping this, but it all became clear in the robo bean lesson. - The figures in image 7 & 8 look really nice. A breast critique: I don't know what your reference looked like, but there is usually some space between the breasts. (Common Mistakes of Drawing Breasts ) - I found it pretty fun to draw figures from imagination by starting with a bean, then extending it with gesture lines for the limbs. You might want to try this too. - Have you noticed that there is a critique video at the end of each section Figure Drawing Critiques – The Bean. As a complement to posting for feedback, you might appreciate hearing Stan's and Marshall's feedback on other peoples work. Cheers!

@Steve Lenze @Jesper Axelsson @Frank D'souza I wanted to ask for some critiques since most seem to have more experienced in these than me. If u all have some tips to give me some insight on what I may be lacking I know you all may be busy with your own art journeys so whenever you have time

Hi, I’m not a great fan of the bean method, it doesn’t seem to do the trick for me. But as @Frank D'souza says if you post some reference we could give you some tips on torsos. I think we might be able to help with finding the centerline, and giving the beans some straight lines to structure them a little. Good work though!

Hey, I have no feedback to give, sorry. I just finished the bean lessons a few weeks ago and I would not consider myself a master; I'll leave this for the more experienced to critique. But from the perspective of a beginner, I'd say these are looking nice. Except the two drawings in the top right corner (first page), something about them feels off can't put my finger on it. But the rest are looking good. Also, post your reference images along with your drawings. So we know what kind of choices you're making and whether they're right or not. It's hard to critique your work when we have no standard to measure it against. Finally, I just wanted to ask if you've been drawing just for fun on the side. Practice is good, but too much can burn you out. I'm not telling you to lessen your practice, but remember to sketch on the side too. Do you keep a sketchbook purely for fun? No practice, just turn off your brain and draw like a child again.
