Journey 1- gesture critiques

@silentmoonss
Hello I had decided to just take a week off of drawing and am now here to start what I really wanted to do and that deals heavily with characters and figures ect. So I opted with this curriculum that I found online and it seemed pretty legit so I’m starting with figure drawing as my new goal. Now I started this on 1st if this month so if anyone has any critiques( I couldn’t purchase prokos premium course because I don’t have money so I’m here) I will be posting my progress of this weekly . The images of people are generally what I’ve been practicing with so if anyone has and tips or whether or not I’m in the right track or can move ahead is much appreciated.

Hello I’m a bit late these were supposed to be posted yesterday since I’m doing this weekly but things happened so I had to post them today. I tried to change up some of my figures and attempt to implement the critiques I’ve gotten. Balance seems to be the hardest to grasp because trying to implement exaggeration with balance is kinda like a puzzle. I tried implementing the bean method and it’s kinda making it a bit easier, I’ve also started increasing the size of the torso. The main focus is balance since I’m now making that my goal. But these are what I pulled off and still trying now. If u all can please critique my work on what I should change or what else I could do that is much appreciated. some of the poses are from imagination

Hey silentmoons, I agree with what the others had to say about your proportion and balance, and you should follow that advise. I want to add to that what I see in your drawings. Mostly, you are finding the gesture in the limbs of the body. Short gestures that describe some parts of the pose. To be an effective gesture drawing, we need to find gesture lines that describe the whole pose, including the head, from the top to the bottom. This gives the whole body a rhythm and fluidity that makes the figure so beautiful. I did a quick sketch over some of your poses to show you what I mean, I hope it helps :)

Hey, I think these gestures are pretty good. You're finding the flow between the major forms and not focusing on the contour. There's a good use of S curves and C curves, generally I'd say you're off to a good start. The only thing that really jumped out at me is the proportions of the torso. You're drawing the ribcage way too small, while proportions are not the main focus during gesture you shouldn't distort the proportions too much. Usually a good thing to keep in mind is that the torso is about 4 heads tall (if there isn't any major foreshortening). Another thing I'd point out is that in the last page there's a figure off balance. In your drawing, the ribcage is leaning out way too far. While I do think it's good that you're exaggerating the gesture of the torso, you consequently put the figure off balance. That pose wouldn't possible in real life, if you tried it you would fall over. To check if a figure is balanced, determine the center of mass and draw a line down to the floor. The masses should be centered around the line that you drew. If I do this to your drawing, the ribcage is way out to the right side with no support. Notice how in the reference image that the ribcage leans to the right but to counter balance that the left leg also leans to the right. The left leg leaning towards the right is crucial to keeping the pose balanced (which is what's missing from your drawing). Overall, besides a few proportion issues these gestures are pretty good. Keep up the good work.

Thank you for the critique I greatly appreciate u taking time to do this. Though I now understand what the center of gravity is now I’m starting to question whether or not I’m actually seeing the flow correctly and if I’m doing this correctly( I looked at the latest critique and they said I was only doing the limbs as gestural and not the entire body) so I’m a bit confused as to what about the body is not gestural because I thought that was what I was doing (the torso area). I believed that I at least was having the body be gestural but I exaggerated a bit too much. So if u can please explain to me what it is. Also I’m confused regarding implementing balance like I understand the concept but how exactly do u know I if you’re applying ive checked prokos video but unless I was just not paying attention, He doesn’t explicitly show it.

Great critique, I agree with what Frank says. @silentmoonss one thing that really helped me with balance is understanding where the centre of gravity is in the figures. You might want to check this image where I talked about COG in men and women. https://www.proko.com/s/535Z I would also recommend Iteration. Try drawing the same image several times. You draw, then assess what needs improving, and then draw again. I would do this at least four or five times. You drawing to learn and discover! Take your time with an image. looking forward to seeing how you improve
