I’d advise him to get the proportions mainly; the shading looks good, he’s well on his way to mastering that. Be sure to use really nail those proportions though, maybe study the basic planes of the face ( however if that’s too daunting, just really focus on the most basic proportions such as the distance between the eyes, nose, mouth etc ).
