Day 5 - Warriors - 12 Days of Proko

Stan Prokopenko
Today, we focus on warriors! Vikings, Barbarians, and other historical groups. Many of the photos have clothing, so you'll get to practice your folds along with the typical fundamentals that come with dynamic poses. Today you have a lot more flexibility with the time. You can do a session of quicksketches (2-7 minutes), full page Layins (20-30 minutes), or longer studies (1 hour +) if you want to pay attention to the details of the clothing, or spend some more time with the shading. Use our timer tool to get the reference and then share your work with the community. INSTRUCTIONS: Go to https://proko.com/timer, select the Day 5 reference pack, choose the quantity and duration in the right sidebar, and start the session! When you’re done, share your warriors here in this thread for a chance to win some prizes. Drawing along with Ben helped me pull the reference in different directions. I didn’t plan on this guy turning into an owl, but he did. 50 minutes.

Super late but finally got some time to take pics of my sketches and write something here haha. Here's the two I did for Day 5. First one is 5 minutes and the second is 30 minutes. I'm not doing all that well with quick sketches.. And I seriously messed up perspective in the second one. But oh well, good thing I noticed that! Self-feedback is also valuable

Warmed up with some 1-2 min gestures and felt like one of the warriors was giving off minotaur vibes, so I went with it. Did a 25-30 min exploration sketch combining some Minotaur reference (Karl Kopinski and Paul Reid) in the sketchbook, and decided to finished it in Procreate.

I drew all 25 photo references that were provided. I tried to spend 5-10 minutes on each sketch. As soon as I saw the portrait of the second man, after I drew the first, I realized that they should be yelling at each other :D  They were even originally turned correctly to look at each other :)

These are wonderful! I love the simplification and shape design in your portraits, and the gestures are very expressive! Well done!

1 hour and 10 minutes poses. I tried pushing the form a bit and playing with line weight on the longer ones.

I wanted to finish rendering and coloring them, but my neck will get hurt from hunching over displayed graphic tablet too long. Anyway, it's fun to join in the challenge.

Wow this challenge was a lot of fun. I was so excited to throw away the timer on this one and play with some details. What a great set of references… I could get lost in them for a very long time. I drew my Viking with graphite and white pencil on toned paper.
