Hello! I recently completed this portrait of Davy Jones from Pirates of the Caribbean. I took a different approach on rendering then what I’d typically do. Please let me know what you guys think, and where it could improve. Thanks!
I love this, as both a fan of the films and of hatching.
I've been going down the hatching rabbit hole and the only thing I could add to the suggestions made, it that the direction / shape of the hatching can change the effect (straight, curved, and angle of the cross hatching) as mentioned, but also the shape of the shaded area can imply shape.
Cross hatching at 90 degrees tends to flatten the appearance, so on something as curvy as Davy Jones you probably want to lean into curved lines where possible and cross hatching at angles less than 90 as much as possible.
I think this looks great, so the above comments are more general information I've picked up rather than specifically referencing anything done in your drawing.
Hey Kevin. You nailed it, mate! The likeness is impeccable. And I love how you designed the planes of this face. He looks as if he's been carved out of wood, which for this character I wouldn't think would work as well as it does, but dang, is it cool. Very cool ink-like render as well. It's so abstracted and tiled, but the values still read as believable and realistic, which is such an accomplishment. You should be proud of this drawing!
One thing that I would think about is the design of the vignette, i.e. where/how you've ended the portrait. Seems like you just picked an arbitrary s-curve across the bottom and cropped it, which to me isn't as attractive a way to end the drawing as it could be. I mean, this is Davy Jones here, with all his tentacles and stuff! I just think there's a missed opportunity to make it a more interesting shape/design with perhaps a fade into the shoulder. But maybe that's just my preference.
Either way, it's great.
Hi, I really love this portrait!
The only thing I can point out are the hatching marks on the cheek. They look a little like hair to me. Maybe that could be avoided, if they were straight lines?
I hope, that helps ;)
Thanks so much! It does help. I don’t typically render with hatching. This was my first attempt at something new. Still getting the hang of that approach. But it’s fun. Thanks!
