Oh man I love Akira Toriyama and his Drangon Ball mangas. How could I not think of him myself!!

This is sick. I think you’re getting it. The issue here is the reference. Akira Toriyama has some amazing ink drawings. One of his ink drawings without the color might work better for this unless you want to try using markers. The color just adds more complexity.
To start, find one without color. I included a bunch of examples.
Something Toriyama is really great at is his use of bold black shapes. Fill those in and keep going with these.

Asked for help
First attempt with the penguin. Struggling with proportions and I hate the feet, but overall I'm happy with the final result. Will try the remaining two tomorrow!
