added comment inProject - Line Master Studies
Asked for help
I'll be honest I'm struggling with the aspect of "studying" a piece of art, it's still sort of alien to me trying to learn how to draw. I'm going to do another study from Glen Keane I think as it may be a bit more obvious what I'm looking for for these line studies.
I chose a Superman drawing by Jim Lee as my first one (there are two attached because I somehow completely did the angle on the logo wrong, which I think came about as I was just not focusing on the angle proper), making notes as I go along just to see if I'm understanding correctly really. I'll share my notes below, if anyone is willing to correct me or even present some advice on what a "study" actually should entail I'm all ears honestly 😅
• Lot of bold outlines around the whole subject, focused thicker lines on the cape and torso
• Inner lines are a lot lighter and looser, showing the direction of the torso/posture
• The face and top of the cape/shoulders especially feature a lot more straight lines than any other part of the subject in contrast to the looser torso lines, showing more structure in these areas (main focus points?)
I struggled with proportions on the face, my Superman is much more square than rectangle but honestly not something I was stressing too much about given the focus I was trying to give to the specific exercise. I think I added a lot of fluff I didn't need to, shading marks on the subject I could have probably omitted but it didn't add much extra time.

When you study a piece of art, you’re trying to get into the original artist’s head to understand something about how they think.
It looks like you picked up on a lot of what Jim Lee was thinking when he drew this Superman. The line weight is dynamic just like Jim Lee.
The jaw is a little small on yours in comparison to the big jaw on his. But that’s ok.
I like your notes. Keep it up!

My 2nd try at this project after watching the demo, it was very hard for me to get into the "loose sketching mode", especially after my first attempt which was me misunderstanding and just trying to replicate the image. I think I lost it a bit on the VR girl, but I was rather happy with the hand and penguin, getting into that sketching brain has been an experience for sure.

Excited to see the Demo's and critiques of this one because I'm not sure if I've done it correctly. Had a go of the spider hand a couple times as I wasn't happy with the first attempt (I didn't block things in where they should go and went off the page...)
Really enjoying the loose sketching though!

First attempts before the demo and then second attempts afterwards.
Felt a lot better after watching the demo, Really helped me understand What I'm trying to do ( even if I don't feel super confident in a lot of my lines). It felt good when I got ones down that I was actually happy with.

First attempt at the pear before getting to the demo. Don't think I'm quite grasping the correct values but it's exciting trying to figure out which parts should be dark / lighter.
Figured i'd give another pear a go, and an attempt at the portrait (definitely above my understanding but I really wanted to try it)
