The most well-known advice about values is that we should keep the light value range and the dark value range clearly separated. How does the local value of an object fit into this? eg: should a black cloth in the light also be lighter than a white cloth in shadow? Or should we design separate light/shadow value ranges for each type of cloth?
LESSON NOTES
Draw along with me as I teach you how to break down a portrait into simple value groups.
I'm also releasing a package of my new Values Guide along with my popular Accuracy and Light Guides - Drawing Fundamentals: Accuracy, Values, & Light

I usually get into trouble with value's. I never squinted i was to focussed on the details. These techniques make it look so nice. Thank you for the livestream.
Finally had a moment to sit down and enjoy this. Very educational, learned a ton I hope to implement as soon as possible. Thank you for doing this!
Very useful Dorian. Thanks. You might want to turn your mike up a little more if there's a next lesson.
I had a little idea about value but did not know how to apply. The tiny value study with a portrait was great ! It is something I can start practicing right away. It was really informative lesson. Thank you !!!
Thanks for the great presentation and information! I was following along with the portrait value study while at work (shhh).
how do you maintain the correct values when drawing texture? it often darkens or lightens my drawing
Hi Dorian, loved your video on Lambert's emission law.
Would drawing on inclined surface improve my drawings?
I currently draw and paint on table surface.
Yes, preferably stand and draw either with an easel or / and with stand up desk ( electrically adjustable from IKEA with a inclined drawing board on top.
Also possible and simple, sitting with a board and a smooth newsprint pad leaning against the back of a chair in front of you.

I say yes, it's better to sit up straight and see it head on to keep the painting/drawing from looking squashed or stretched in perspective, also better for posture and easier movement of your arm and hand.
Hihi, how do you manage shadow groups with dark objects/colour? Aka how to show shadows accurately in a scene with bright object's shadow being on dark object without the dark object being darkest value group completely
