Creature Design with Steven Zapata (LIVESTREAM)
comments 61
Hi Steven,
Over the years I have become more dependent on photo references, especially when it comes to depicting animals and figures in unusual lighting. Do you have any advice about drawing from imagination without references? How important is it to learn to use imagination over reference (what are some of the benefits, etc?)
LESSON NOTES
I'll be sketching a creature from imagination while letting form drive the design.

This is a smashing watch, I very much enjoyed not only his art, but also Steven’s way of expressing his observations/thoughts - thanks.
That was very interesting and fun at the same time.
Well done also for Kristian. Very natural!
What's your advice if someone wants an art jobs in big studios like Disney for example?
Graphite drawings only have so many tones. how do you differentiate between say makeup, bruised flesh and normal sections of shadow?
So I have a question... So what job would you suggest in the art industry that pays satisfactory salary and what are your thoughts about the art jobs in the gaming industry?
I've been drawing and painting for as long as I can remember but I have trouble finishing pieces. In fact, they often don't get past the sketch stage. Any tips?
Dear Kristian and Steven. Now that you mentioned Leyendecker and museums: Which was a memorable exhibit for you that you can remember?
the tree person reminds me odly at baba jaga.
So I would like to ask if you take more reference in folk lore or nature for your creature designs?
Speaking of inspiration, this piece looks like a mix between vulture from spiderman and the thing from fantastic four. What do you think might have influenced this drawing to turn out this way?
How do I know if the reason I dont like doing something, like shading, is because of my personal taste/ temperament or because Im bad at it and want to avoid learning it?
you guys, why do you think studying art history is important? or is it important at all?
You often mention the mental and spiritual aspects of drawing so you might be interested in this tidbit. To me Meditation is an attitude. When a thing pops in the mind you do not put in an effort to suppress it and you do not put in an effort to make it play out further. I think that practice gives you a benefit which is somewhat like sleep. Question: What is meditation to you and how does it relate to drawing?
When it comes to size , you can compare one size to another and get a proportion- as such you dont have to match the size of what you draw but can instead match the size relationship. This is generally accepted to be true of size but do you find the same to be true of value, chroma, hue, angle, roundness, ect... ?
