The girl seems out of proportion. Her arms and legs seem too short. As others have already suggested, study references of people riding a llama.

I am 15 yrs old boy and I am trying my best to understand everything I need to know about art on proko and elsewhere to achieve that dream. I am planning to be a self taught artist using proko.com and other art websites to help my grow. Questions: 1. Could you give me the difference between a concept artist and an illustrator because I want to be them both in the gaming industry someday. 2. When being a self taught artist, would I get less money working in the gaming industry because I have not graduated from a physical art college? 3. Would I hinder myself from getting jobs or a fan base because I don’t have an art degree? 4. Could you give a summary of what it is like working in the gaming industry? 5. Why do you two are so interested in art? 6. What could I do right after I am out of school meanwhile I am learn art and eventually applying for Jobs in the industry? 7. Where would I apply for different companies worldwide? 8. What are some encouragement you two could give to me for always continuing to love art? Thanks for your time in advance and for you lovely answers. I WANT TO WORK AT XBOX SOMEDAY 🥇🧨🥇

1.Concept art is more of a solution to a design problem like a proof of concept that uses art to convey to the game devs that this is how a certain object in the game would function and it has to be designed in such a way. You are laying out different view angles and cross section of something that needs simplification. Whereas illustration is your book covers, trading card artwork, comics. 2. No not at all, your portfolio will speak for you. Just don't mix up too many different genre and styles of artwork in your portfolio. 10-15 best works and cater them to the studio you apply to. 3. You are 15! Hold your horses a little. Job comes later. But won't discourage you from working on building a fanbase. Work one step at a time. Chose one direction and improve in that aspect of art first. Art school is too expensive, online workshops and mentorships are better as you can opt for monthly payments. Right out of school you could look at joining event management companies to get exposure to hosting and arranging event like comic con and other conventions. There you will meet many like minded people and you would gain clarity where you want to go. Since you want to work at xbox, you can learn a programming language and get into the game industry as a programmer. For where to apply for jobs, you should check out artstation jobs, creativeheads.net, and 80.lv has curated jobs for paid members. I hope I was able to answer some of your questions. Keep creating!

Please give some insights into illustrating for graphic novels and their covers as well. What should the process be for the planning out the panels and how is flow of story decided? For the cover, how is the title designed and how are both cover art and title graphics merged together?

Speaking of inspiration, this piece looks like a mix between vulture from spiderman and the thing from fantastic four. What do you think might have influenced this drawing to turn out this way?

Other than Terryl Whitlach and Mike corriero please suggest more creature designers to study for improving world building in our projects? Zbrush artists who create bestiary would also be great source of learning.

How much of an animal/human anatomy does one need to know to become a creature designer? I like drawing animals/figures from photos, but I am not much into studying muscles, their names and so on... Also, how would you go about learning to draw animal-based creatures from imagination? The animal world is so vast that it is a bit overwhelming. Would you start with one group like birds, and focus on it for a longer period? Thanks!

@aby_graphite
Go watch Terryl Witlatch's talks from THU festival on artstation learning. Muscle names shouldn't be important when your beginning but muscle studies, their function, their grouping is all important. You are going to base off the imaginary creature on what you know. And what you know or can study is the human and animal anatomy.

What sort of qualifications would companies be looking for if you wanted to be a concept artist?

Qualifications don't matter as much as a solid portfolio. You should be able to present a solution to a design problem. That is what trent kaniuga talks about in the latest proko video. Also watch fzd school YouTube videos and the student work on their blog to get a better understanding of what studios require of concept artists.

Oliver Turner
Hey Jeremy My name is Oliver and I am 19, been drawing and creating for about 2 years now. I'm a first year art student, going into second year for video game art next fall. I'm looking into getting into character and environment concept art. I've been mostly traditional up until a few weeks ago when I started practicing and getting into digital painting, so I am still adjusting to the medium. I guess my biggest question is how does one break into the industry? Every job listing I look at has a minimum of a couple years experience in said industry, so where do I get started? I've put a couple of digital drawings I've done, mostly just practice and getting to grips with it, as well as some of my more traditional drawings. Hope to hear from ya!

Right now all you need is to build a visual library. Consume the media you one day want to produce, but don't let it be a time waster, you are doing this for exposure and to widen your horizon. As for learning resources Peter has already mentioned most of them. But here are some you can explore: DISCORD: Check if the professionals you are listening to have channel on discord. Trent kaniuga and paintable are two great channels. YouTube : FZD school, Brooks Eggleston, Trent kaniuga, The art of Aaron Blaise, David finch, Dave greco, Marco bucci, Marc Brunet, Mark Crilley, Steven zapata, Ahmed Aldoori, Sinix, Adam duff lucid pixel, bobby chiu, and yan sculpts and follygon. Do check out matt kohr's ctrlpaint.com for digital painting basics. He even has a course on artstation learning which is free for 2021. Artists on YouTube do offer some courses using gumroad, patreon, or their own website. You can get into learning sculpture. Traditional clay sculptures will automatically improve your understanding of anatomy while digital sculpture is a great tool to iterate concepts quickly. You can look into 3d modelling later as a step up and you'll understand it better this way. If you want to do commissions for others, then begin with making a presence on deviant art. Join relevant groups and start accepting commissions for lets say pet portraits for a nominal fee. This should give you the experience of your very first paid gigs. Besides artstation learning gnomon twitch channel is a great resource for past live workshops. I have recently found daisie.com which provides free workshops on various topics via zoom.
