Mermaids & Myths - Course by Patrick Jones & Grafit Studio
Our best value of the year.
Deal good through December 4th.
Greetings, fellow artists and seekers of the sublime. Welcome to a journey not just of the hand, but of the mind and spirit.
Since the days of antiquity, we have looked to the shadows, the seas, and the skies, asking ourselves: What breathes life into a myth? Is it the precision of the form, or the fire of the soul within it? To draw the fantastical—to conjure giants, sirens, and the gods themselves onto a blank page—we must first understand how the human mind works and communicates with our mortal hands. We must seek out the why just as fiercely as the how.
Over the next thirteen hours, we will explore 15 distinct "potions" of knowledge. Together, we will venture beyond mere mechanics to discover the emotional truths that turn a simple sketch into a colossal monument of imagination.
What makes this odyssey truly unique is our unprecedented glimpse into the crucible of creation itself. We will explore the dynamic process of working with live models from the esteemed Grafit Studio, with Patrick himself personally art directing the shoot. To see the artist orchestrate the living muse—sculpting light, shadow, and human energy before the first mark is ever made—is a rare gift that illuminates the very genesis of our myths.
Here is the path we shall walk together:
I. The Living Muse (Creating a Fantasy Photo Shoot)
Before the charcoal touches the paper, the story must be born. We begin by stepping into the world of the living muse, witnessing firsthand the unique collaboration that sets the stage for our art.
- Awakening the Flame: We will explore how Patrick art directs, motivates, and collaborates with the live models of Grafit Studio, bringing mermaids, mermen, and ancient titans into our midst.
- The Emotional Prompt: True gesture begins with feeling. We will learn how to communicate crystal-clear emotional themes that draw out the monsters, the magic, and the human revolt, capturing the three-dimensional turnaround that will serve as our guiding light.
II. The Architecture of Myth (Draw Overs)
With our reference captured and our vision set, we must understand the structures beneath the skin. This is where the philosopher meets the anatomist.
- Wedges, Compression, and Flow: We will look at our giants and sirens and dissect the asymmetry of life. What makes a pose dynamic? What brings a terrifying reality to the Hydra?
- The Truth Beneath the Form: By stripping away the illusions, we find the major bone landmarks and muscle flows. We will morph skin tones, swap limbs, and build a perfect understanding of the mechanics that make the impossible feel undeniably real.
III. The Subconscious Art Engine (The Drawings)
Finally, we take up our tools—the magic pencils, the charcoal, the very instruments of our expression—and we create.
- Feeding the Subconscious: We will delve into drawing fast slowly, relying on sticky curves, memory preservation, and the therapeutic nature of art to build upon our foundations.
- Emotion in Motion: From The Wail of the Catwoman to The Embrace of the Hydra, we will master the dimensions of light and shadow. We will craft scenes with a cinematic gravity and atmospheric tension, bringing a deep, brooding darkness to the page that elevates our mythological beasts.
- The Human Touch: In a world increasingly driven by the artificial, we will celebrate the ghostly drawings, the ugly phases, and the beautiful mistakes. We will find that secret light in the darkness, capturing the essence of the living model through the indomitable spirit of the artist's soul.
Art is not merely the replication of what we see; it is the translation of what we feel. Grab your tools, ignite your curiosity, and let us step into the fantastic!
Welcome to the murky depths. Welcome to Mermaids and Myths…
