At some point in your life you’ve probably pushed around some play dough or taken an art class where you were supposed to sculpt something in clay. However, chances are good that if you've wanted to get serious with sculpting you've probably found that it was hard to find good material on the subject. That's why I've created this course. It's designed to help beginners looking to get serious with sculpting while also covering fundamentals that more experienced sculptors will appreciate. Whatever your skill level this course will give you the knowledge and tools to sculpt the human figure.

What you will learn
1Materials and Supplies
It can be tricky to decide what supplies you need to get started so I take you through common tools and types of clay you can use.
2Wire Armature
I show you my method for building wire armatures to support the clay and make sure your figures are proportional.
3Gesture and Balance
Just like with drawing gesture and balance are important elements to sculpture so in this section I go over how to capture the gesture with an armature and quickly rough out some of the mass.
4References
Beginners often overlook the importance of good references for sculpting so I’ll show you how to take your own references to sculpt from and talk about what makes a good pose for sculpting.
5Building Out the Sculpture
When adding clay it helps to have a system in place to help guide the process and make sure that the right amount of mass is being added to the right area.
6Primary Forms
Being able to focus on the primary forms before worrying about details will help your sculptures have a solid foundation. I’ll go over how to sculpt the simplified head, rib cage, and pelvis.
7Sculpting Mistakes
I'll have lessons addressing the most common sculpting mistakes beginners make and how to avoid them.
8Figurative Abstraction
Understanding how to reduce a complex figure into its most essential elements is not as easy as you might think. Understanding abstraction and how and when to use it can make you a better artist with more visual tools at your disposal.
9Study Boards
Study boards are a great way to practice things like the facial features, textures, low, medium, and high relief, and more.
10Mold Making
I’ll show you some of the basics of mold making on a budget so you can make permanent casts of your sculptures.
11Full Demo
We’ll have full demos on the sculpting process so you can see how a sculpture is made from start to finish.
