One Hour Art School

I’ve talked to hundreds of people across creative industries about what helped them succeed.

Some went to art school and some didn’t.

A recurring sentiment was that art school cost too much, and much of what they gained could have been found elsewhere for less.

This course brings those conversations together into nine weeks of lectures and assignments. We’ll cover finding your direction, staying motivated, and figuring out what to work on and why.

The purpose of art school is helping a student find their creative purpose, if you can figure that out on your own, why do you need it in the first place?

This course includes:

  • Lectures and assignments designed to help you find your direction
  • A weekly guided structure to keep you focused and consistent
  • Drawing and technical lessons later on to support and contextualize the ideas

The Way You're Supposed to Take this Course, and what this course isn't.

The Title One Hour Art School is meant more as a statement about how the course is meant to be taken, not how long the course is in total.

One hour is enough time that anyone can start with, and reasonably fit in their schedule without having a hurdle that blocks you from doing it. It's more about the specific amount of time you dedicate towards learning something without it becoming a thing that's so daunting that you either burn out or get discouraged.

It could also be called 1 minute art school, or 30 seconds. But I think 1 hour fits that sweet spot of not being so difficult to fit in, without it being such a short amount of time where the benefits are diminished.

This course isn’t meant to replace art school. It’s a guide to building your own art education, your way, without spending thousands of dollars on something that doesn’t fit how you learn.

I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about how I learn best. What I’ve found is that it takes hard work, with advice at crucial decision-making moments to help me stay on track. This course is my attempt to articulate what I believe are the most efficient ways to learn and move toward your goals.

It’s meant to be challenging and transformative. I genuinely believe that following this advice will help you, not just because it’s worked for me, but because it comes from some of the creative minds I trust most.

Treat this as more of a book you buy to gain someone else's perspective, instead of a replacement to an art education.

Some Basic Drawing Lessons:

This isn't necessarily a drawing course, but I do go into some drawing principles for the sake of getting your ideas down. At least as it relates to creativity,  I think that technical skill is not the most important thing. That being said, some amount of it is useful to start getting your ideas across.

About Me
I'm Kristian Nee, I host the Sketchy Van Podcast where I talk to creative professionals about their careers, I teach art and drawing fundamentals.
Outside of teaching, I've gotten a look behind the curtain at major art studios and development teams, enough to see a clear pattern in who actually makes it and who doesn't.

Spoiler: it's rarely about talent. This course is my attempt to hand you that pattern directly, instead of making you spend years and thousands of dollars finding it yourself.
