ASSIGNMENTS

Objective:

Practice drawing challenging poses with a focus on foreshortening and gesture.

What You’ll Do:

  1. Use the provided reference images to draw different poses.
  2. Focus on foreshortening by adjusting line lengths to show depth.
  3. Apply wrapping lines to emphasize form.
  4. Work on different angles:
    • Front and back views – Maintain the natural asymmetry of the spine.
    • Crouching and leaning forward – Adjust spine lines to show compression (pinch).

Key Skills:

  • Capturing depth and movement
  • Understanding how the body bends and twists
  • Making confident, expressive lines

Final Notes:

  • Think about the flow of the pose.
  • Don’t worry about perfect details—focus on the gesture and structure.
  • Have fun and good luck!

Deadline - submit by March 25, 2025 for a chance to be in the critique video!

I'm so new to the whole repetition concept. I did these over a couple days and by the last few poses I felt more confident, my brush strokes had changed and I feel more comfortable in drawing gesture. They aren't perfect whatsoever but I found it insightful.

Hi :) don't forget your contour lines... they give volume and direction i.e. allows us to see whether the limbs are coming towards us or away from us.

Assignment submissions. I think I'm using too many cross contours

Some better, some worse, but always moving forward in small steps 😊

A couple gesture drawings! Would love any critiques/insight into showing weight on a leg that’s sitting on something (last photo) or foreshortening. Thanks!
Michael Hampton
Great studies! For the weight leg you can try using a darker line weight or sharper lines. I find this helps make that area feel more visually important. This doesn't just apply to a leg but any other part (leg, shoulder, pelvis, etc.).
@blessyoudear
here is my attempt at difficulty poses. The twisted ones were incredibly challenging to figure out the rhythm of, and yet I hope that I did alright

Here are my latest gesture sketches from the Difficult Poses assignment images. Some were definitely tricky! Comments welcome - I have not yet watched the demos & critiques, will return to some of these after that.

Cross contours are looking good!

Hi everyone, just finished this assignment. I need to keep working on more foreshortened poses, i struggle to find rhythm in them and often elongate them also. But I enjoyed the challenge. Any feedback or critique on these would be greatly appreciated 🙏🏽
Melanie Scearce
love the gestures in your last page of drawings. It looks to me like you're getting it. Really lovely work!

Here's my project. Some poses were difficult, and I'm not sure how well they turned out. I'd appreciate feedback

@gothamdemon
This was def a challenge but I think I did well and tried doing the same pose twice since the first felt too straight.
Melanie Scearce
These have great energy, nice work 👍
@fluffybuttss
I think I’m doing a lot better! Though it was hard to focus on “making the lines shorter” when the reference was right there for me to look at. Critique would be much appreciated

These are looking great! I checked out your older posts and these are an improvement. 🙌
@updatednomad
If anyone can share their gesture drawings of these two pictures (3 and 2 I believe), I'd appreciate it. Having trouble with the angle of these figures.

Here's my analyses of these poses, hope this helps!

Thanks for the great assignment together with so much reference images! I really like when a pose allows for a gesture line from the head to toe. It’s my favourite pose and also helps anchor the gesture in my opinion. Gonna watch the demos & critique next but any feedback/critique is welcome :)

Hi guys :) This was my attempt to more complex gestures, ngl I had a very hard time with the bending poses. Swapping the stretch with the lumber feels very odd to me haha. But please i would like some feedback on these and how to get more efficient and effective when doing these gestures.
Michael Hampton
Nicely done! I think you kept a great sense of rhythm throughout and avoided any contour or static areas.
