Person that has never designed a non human character, that never drew a character turn around and never did multiple things together in a perspective grid, at 4pm: "Yeah this seem fast, I'll just do it before dinner how hard can it be" Needless to say, I did not do it before dinner but I did manage to do it before bed! In retrospect I should have maybe looked up some tutorials, I'm fairly happy with it for what it is tho
LESSON NOTES

What's in Premium?

In this premium lesson, you'll learn techniques for drawing diggers and characters using simple shapes:

  • Drawing Diggers with Blobs: Start by sketching side and front views of a digger, then use blobs to represent its three-dimensional form.

  • Defining Planes with Rubber Bands: Apply rubber bands around blobs to indicate front, top, and side planes, helping you visualize how different planes relate in 3D space.

  • Exploring Perspectives: Practice drawing diggers from various angles, including upward and downward views, and learn how lines move away from the viewer.

  • Combining Multiple Perspectives: Understand how to integrate objects with different orientations and vanishing points in one scene.

  • Character Design with Blobs: Use blobs and the rubber band technique to design characters, enhancing their three-dimensionality and depth.

  • Overcoming Creative Blocks: Learn methods like sketching various ideas and using orthographic views to clarify shapes and proportions.

This lesson expands your skills in form, perspective, and character creation.

Learn to use blobs, grids, and perspective techniques to draw diggers and scenes with depth, even when combining multiple perspective systems.

outlet face guy. The blob approach is really useful for just getting a rough idea of where your character's position is.

I really enjoy doing this, this blob aproach it´s magic

I did some diggers on my other notebook, this is my own orthos for my little alien dude

I did my best. It really stretched my brain. :D It was begging me to quit, but I pushed through and got things done.

I could have done a better job with the diggers. I did not have a lot of fun drawing them. I also tried a character turn around.

The apple guy is fun!

I love blobs so much. it's such a quick way to jot down poses for anything.

Shape play + orthos.

I drew some diggers! I struggled with some of my initial drawings but got much more comfortable as I drew more and more diggers. It became easier for me to see the big picture and simply shapes.

I LOVE blobs with rubber bands!! I can't believe how much spatial information a couple of arcs can add to a 2D ellipse. This was so freeing as well--it removed some hesitation about which exact angle to throw a line in and let the forms feel more loose and quick. The excavator was a fun example :)

I used to think that a picture can only have 1-4 vanishing points. However, this lesson made me realise that an obj/env/character can have parts that correspond to multiple vanishing points (e.g. parts that can turn). I have thoroughly enjoyed this lesson. Gave the digger a go too, and the orthos and the Blob Approach were a massive help! I did the side view first, then the front, top and finally the 3/4 view. The orthos helped me to get the 3D concept into my head better and guide the proportions. While the Blob Approach helped me draw the base of the 3/4 view. I also drew some striped socks like in the video. I couldn't get the form or the orthos of the human feet correct - but hope to try again after watching the 'How to Mechanize Organic Forms' lesson.

Hi everyone, have we learned how to do orthographic projections in this course, (basically drawing front, side, top views in proportion)? I apologize if I've missed it. Just wondering if we're expected to learn it on our own or if it'll be covered later here if it already hasn't been.

Looks like it's coming up soon in lesson 5.

Trying out the app - it’s really helpful! - my drawings are still really wonky - does anyone else get kind of a ‘magic eye’ thing happening with your boxes where they turn inside out while drawing? Started marking the ‘forward corner’ 🤔✨

I like the app. To me, it seems that it will be a great reference tool for basic shapes and the perspective of them, practicing daily. My drawings are also wonky, and hopefully with the repetition of daily practice, my drawings will improve. For improving line work, watch the Straight Line Discipline with Peter Han lesson. I would think applying some of his line exercises while drawing the basic shapes will give extra bang for the buck. I get the magic eye thing with drawn through boxes. This is covered on the Isometric Optical Illusions Assignment lesson. Cheers!

Not sure if I'm having a harder time today or better notiing where its off

Notes from the lesson and fooling around with the 3D model. I didn't reference the model too much. Instead, I drew some orthos and tried turning it in my imagination. I struggle with proportions although I know how to divide evenly in perspective. It's just not intuitive yet I guess.
