I tried this one in watersouble pencils first for fun and drawing practice then in pastel. My paper size is small so I unfortunately had to cut too much of hat off in order to enlarge the face for the sake of the portrait practice and dealing with the challenge of chunky pastels. Will try it in oils at a later stage.
I really enjoyed this assignment. Your demo was great. What a wonderful triibute to your friend, Pete. I haven't worked with pastels very much, so this was good for me.
I like the limited pallet you gave this. The gray set off the flesh tones quite nicely. Drawing could be a little bit more accurate but overall, I like it.
Thank you for showing us how you created a beautiful portrait of Pete. I occasionally used pastels years ago, but no longer. My drawing came out very photographic-looking. Not like painting-like you have done. Not sure if it is the issues of edges, or value, or something else. Did I work too much to obtain the likeliness?
I think you did very well with the face and the like this is very good and not a problem at all. I would say his vast and shirt are where you could have given a more painterly effect with Boulder strokes, and it would’ve given the whole pastel a different feeling. Use the side of the pastel when doing the larger areas to contrast with the detail when you’re doing a face.
