LESSON NOTES

What's in Premium?

In the premium lesson on Drawing Figures with Gesture and Anatomy, you'll learn how to:

  • Capture gesture to represent the figure's movement and energy using light, flowing lines.
  • Indicate key anatomical landmarks like the spine, pelvis, and joints using simple shapes to establish proportions and alignment.
  • Understand and visualize the figure's perspective, considering three-dimensional forms like the rib cage and pelvic box.
  • Add muscles and anatomy over the structural forms, simplifying complex muscle groups into basic shapes.
  • Emphasize pinches and stretches in muscle forms to enhance the figure's dynamism.
  • Consider light and shadow when rendering to convey surface and volume effectively.
  • Work holistically on the figure to maintain consistent proportions and a unified drawing.
  • Integrate gesture and anatomy to create drawings that are both structurally sound and expressive.

Here are a couple additional demos showing how gesture leads to strong, believable anatomy through clear construction and design.
Michael Hampton
Not really. I actually just went to a ton of lectures and classes and remembered names just from hearing them a bunch. The shapes I learned more from making them into silly or memorable patterns 🤷🏻‍♂️

Hey Michael, if you're checking out the comments I was curious if you could share for a beginner like me how you study anatomy? I'm surprised how you can name muscles and everything. Do you kind of study it like a med student would?
Josh Fiddler
This was a fantastic course. As I've taken the construction course (still need to finish my constructions 😬) these two demos were a nice review with more detailed info. I especially like the "pattern recognition" idea of building anatomy off the underlying steps. As a tool for study and understanding, I think this is a nice complement to the more gestural approach to anatomy that Mike Mattesi employs using his methods. With your process, there is a strong emphasis on understanding placement and the two basic functions: flexion & extension that with a clear understanding of those for each part of the body, someone trained in the FORCE method can easily then transition in and out of that rhythmic process: Hamption for investigation and study of structure, Mattesi for investigation and study of rhythm and dynamism.

That was a lot of information. But I'm glad I took the course. It really helped me A LOT. This is how I started 31. December when I wanted to learn how to draw. I only did the outlines and wonderd why it looks bad lol (3rd pic) and this is my latest one (from yesterday - 4th pic) Ofc it's far from good but I think I did learn a lot of things in this course. The best course ever. I hope with the 2nd one I can improve more. Thank you!!

That's a good amount of progress! Congratulations! Learning to think inside the figure is a massive hurdle. Keep it up!
