On 18x24 paper in charcoal. It looks good in person but looks so off in photo. Open to all critiques please. I didnt post reference because if you can guess the actress it means I'm getting better at likeness.whats your guesses? I've only been drawing portraits since april @Stan Prokopenko @Bradwynn Jones @everyone sorry about the photo quality.I'll do better

Hiya, I like the details on this one - I feel like you did a good job of rendering out the nose especially! I think your skills with detail might be leading you to copy shadows/detail exactly as you see it rather than focusing on mapping out the shadows in a way that creates likeness and form. I'm guessing that the reference you're using doesn't have a lot of strong lighting but it might be worth exaggerating the shadows a bit to create form and create interesting shapes rather than copying exactly what you see. I mainly just moved the right eye down and shaved off some of the jaw on the left side which fixes some perspective problems. Then I tried to only use dark darks in areas that won't receive a lot of light (i.e. the inner eye socket) rather than using them to show details (I removed a lot of the lower eyelid details as the lower eyelid tends to get a lot more light than the upper eyelid/eyelashes). It probably strays from your reference but helps make it look a little more 3D. I hope some of that is helpful. In terms of celebrity, I thought maybe Natalie Portman, but mine ended up looking like Emilia Clarke haha.

Hi @Matthew Medeiros I see others mentioned the right eye being too high. As for the actress I'm going to guess Gina Davis. For the proportions of the head I sometimes use head references to build upon. Keep up the good work.

Thanks. I should probably start using a reference like this too. It's not gina Davis but I can see it

I think you could totally benefit from some Loomis head studies, learning where to put the facial features and shapes, her eye and eye brow for example are too high up, Proko's video on Loomis head: https://youtu.be/wAOldLWIDSM . The ear is too small this can be avoided by using a short cylinder for the ear in the sketching phases. Keep up the good work!

Yes usualy start with a Loomis head but now tht I think of it, when I'm making edits and tweaks I think I'm just changing the features and not the construction the head, which would probably make more sense

I just started portrait drawing, and flatness is something Im struggling with. and I think is flat, like, there isnt an illusion of the head being in 3D space. I could be wrong.

Hi @Matthew Medeiros, Hmm... I am not certain, but my first guess would be the actress Felicity Jones.. (Don't shoot me if I am mistaken ;) ) I agree with @zms that her left eye ( the right eyes for the viewer) seems to high or that her head isn't tilted enough to explain the hight difference between her eyes. I think that before diving into the fase of shadow mapping, have a look again and the basic construction (the simple shapes and perspective; is her head more tilted in the original photo? Could you post it? :) ) of her head and, and also the basic construction of her features. I think that by having a look again at this again, you could solve what feels wrong. Cheers, Leon

I can't help much with shadows, but I do feel like the eyes are wrong - one seems higher than the other and the head doesn't look like it's tilted. I can't quite figure out who it is, though that's probably due to my lack of celebrity knowledge and not a reflection of your art.

Yes that was one of the things that looked correct until I looked at it through the photo. I didnt know this celebrity before I drew her. I asked my girlfriend who to draw so she might not be very well known. I'll post the reference soon
