When ready to start own projects

Hey everyone,
I’ve been practicing fundamentals for over two years now, and slowly, some small ideas and projects are starting to form. But I have this huge mental block — every day I just keep practicing basics and doing exercises.
I know there’s still years of learning ahead, but when does that feeling of being an artist actually come?
I can’t even draw a clean portrait yet.
How do you deal with this? I’d love to sketch, illustrate, and so on.
Thanks so much!!

You're always ready and you're never ready. I mean there is always something about a project that will challenge you, but that should never stop you from trying. Do personal projects regularly. Carry around a sketchbook and sketch regularly. It takes many years to get to the point where you'll like looking at your own work, but the more you draw the faster you'll get there.
Don't let perfection be your enemy! Just come up with a project for yourself you'd find fun and try and enjoy the process regardless of how it comes out. Allow yourself to be creatively free and don't worry if it looks ugly! Eg illustrate a cover for your favourite book or your favourite scene from a movie (from memory) and just go for it. You never have to show anyone if it's awful but you might surprise yourself :)
