Understanding Structure

James Paris
Hey everyone ! First post here ! I'm currently trying to understand structures and i could use feedback on thoses assignements. I'm using the Free proko videos on Youtube to guide me, but watching my sketches, i'm starting to think that the more I do it, the more i'm loosing myself in complexity ? For exemple, I think the Rhino is pretty okay ( Did this one just after watching "The structure Basics critique" on Youtube/Proko ) but aside from this one, i don't really know if i'm going in the right direction Edit : Rewatching them , I also think i may be using too much cross contours ? Ps : English is not my native language, so sorry if the wording is a bit weird sometimes :D

Hey James! Good job on these! You're definitely understanding the concepts in the video, all of these are correct enough to give the impression of what you were drawing. In terms of what I would say on how to make them better, I think your observation of making them overly complex is correct. You're definitely on the right track, but it feels like you're drawing in the way that Stan did for the video. In that lesson, he over exaggerates the basic forms in drawing. When drawing you want to keep those concepts in mind but you want to sort of let go of them at a certain point. If you look at other people's animal drawings, you can tell that they understand the point of contour lines and primary shapes but they only use them when absolutely necessary. I've included a digram from Stan and some art from Carlos Huante, and Ben M Young. Looking at the drawing of the nude female, specifically at her left arm, you can see it's only a couple of lines with a core shadow and hard edge to indicate it's moving backwards in space. What I would recommend is to look at @Scott Flanders's video Creature Design with Scott Flanders - Lightbox Expo Demo. In it he explains how being sensitive to shape and silhouette and make your art a lot more indicative of what you're depicting. And @Jeffrey Watts's content in general. I can tell you understand the contour lines, the art of it is finding different ways of showing the turning of the form without contour lines. Even though that's easy, it won't ever be as cool as successfully hinting at it. Jeff is a master of that. Hope this helps!

Well that's a really in depth answer ! Indeed, i tried to replicate the way Stan drew in the video I just spent some time comparing my drawings to other's , and yeah, i definitely lost myself in complexity for some of them ! I will try to simplify my next studies and avoid overusing cross contours I will catch up on Scott flander's video and Jeffrey Watts's work too ! And thank you for your time !

I think your drawings are really good! As said before you would probably benefit from focusing on 3D Volumes. The way I really like to draw is inspired by this Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJYGFwGhHnA&t=359s The very loose and relaxed way Tim Gula holds his Pen is very helpfull for staying relaxed and getting even nicer linequality. Perspective and simple geometrical shaes is allways usefull to practice but I think when it comes to drawing getting in this relaxed meditativ state of mind can do a lot as well!!!

Thank you ! I think a watched this video a while back, unfortunately i wasn't really serious about improving my drawings skills a that point, so it went over my head a bit ! I'll watch it more seriously this time because yeah, i could use some relaxation when drawing !

What I think would benefit you the most is practicing basic forms more, draw boxes and cylinders, then put a cross cotour on them. It seems like you are blocking in the image an then trying to add planes and cross contours, it's not necessary a bad aproach, but keep in mind the procedure that proko does when drawing the camel on the video, it's more simplified and more focus on the 3D volumes rather than copy the 2D silhuettes. Hope this was useful.

Hey, thanks for your answer ! "It seems like you are blocking in the image an then trying to add planes and cross contour " It's exactly that ! And i'm just realizing now that i didn't train cylinders much, i totally focused on boxes. And yeah, i sometimes really struggle to define a form with cross contours Anyway, i'll do some more boxes/cylinders Again, thanks for your reply !
