Torso study from Yoni Model pack!

Hi! I've been going through the Proko anatomy course again (with a side order of Bridgman's Constructive Anatomy) and it's been melting my brain (in a good way!) I decided to draw something I feel pretty comfortable with, the front of a torso! I was trying to imitate Taran Fiddler's minotaur studies as far as brushwork goes (https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FKxmfFvVIAE15wX) Of course, his has significantly more color variation, though anatomy was the main focus of my pieces. If the upper arms look like an after thought, it's because they were. I'd love some tips on what I did right, what I did wrong, where to go from here, etc., etc.

Hey, @Jason Arizona! This is a cool study, and I like the sense of 3D form you were able to convey. Mainly, what I see as to what could be done differently is that, even though the muscles may look good on the surface, it feels as if the bone structure underneath is not strongly defined. The centerline of the torso looks a little bit crooked, and the neck muscles don’t seem cohesively connected to the same structure as the torso muscles. When focusing on anatomy, what I’d recommend is to approach drawing the body in a constructive way from the inside out: start with a simple gesture lay-in, define the skeletal structure and then find the attachment points of the muscles to build their forms on top - I think this is the best way to get anatomy correctly and also to make it stick on the mind as a more solid knowledge as you practice. By using such an approach on a torso study like this, one thing you’d certainly not forget to do would be to add the arms since early on because the Pecs, Lats and various other important torso muscles also attach straight to the Humerus (the upper arm bone). In general, considering the skeleton is somewhat a guarantee to make more sense out of the muscular forms, which should then help in making for stronger drawings. Hope this helps. Keep it up! Best regards 🙌🏻

Hey! This is awesome! I love the brush strokes and the simple anatomy. To me it feels like you could've organized your shadow shapes to be more definite. Right now the values are all over the place which makes the forms hard to read, and the image flat. Also the traps seems to me should be more pronounced. It would help to have the reference to compare to.

Hi, thank you for the criticism! Looking at your correction next to the reference image I used, the shading on the serratus is much more accurate, though I think the traps are the correct size, but i forgot to indicate the tilt by not making the pecs wrap around the ribcage.

Hey Jason, This is a cool painting. I think though that your loosing the 3D quality of the shapes of the torso. For example, the rib cage doesn't feel like it has sides to it. I did a quick sketch to show you what I mean. It's kind of exaggerated, but it is something we have to think about in our work. Hope it helps :)

Thank you, this really helped!
