Struggling with hatching/crosshatching
2yr
@cluz
Hello, I'm looking for some feedback on my hatching/crosshatching, I find that I either add to much like the first drawing or too little like the old man. (That's all based on David Finch's videos) Any tips?

Hey Cluz! Nice job on these two examples. I understand your struggle, it's always a challenge to balance crosshatching. What helps is doing comparative exercises like this! You have two great examples where you feel you've over rendered, and one where you've under rendered. Try a third attempt and see if you can hit the sweet spot! Next, take a look at how others approach crosshatching, and see if you can pick up on the cues of where, and how they crosshatch. Over time you'll start to instinctively feel where your picture needs more rendering and where you can be more subtle. Crosshatching should also follow the contours of the form it is describing beneath it, it gives the impression of a rubber band wrapped all the way around the form. Take a look at the David Finch Crosshatching for Comics video for a little more info! Keep up the good work!! https://www.proko.com/lesson/how-to-cross-hatch-for-comics-david-finch/discussions

Also take a look at Rendering in Pen and Ink by Arthur Guptill for some great pen and ink technique study!
