Stone Portal
4yr
Alessandro Dalponte
I just finished this concept art of a stone portal. I painted this using Krita and will soon post a video on youtube talking about the whole process.
Please tell me what you think!
I still need to work better on my occlusion shadows and other things.

Hey @Alessandro Dalponte ! I like the prior feedback about lighting and color variation- but I wanted to apply that on top of different silhouettes. There's nothing wrong with your initial design other than that the concept hasn't been fully explored yet! I did a paintover to try to push and pull the proportions and I made the material a more definitive canyon rock. (There was a conflict for me between the overgrowth/vines and the seemingly dry environment).
I changed the colors, but my main focus was to simply to create a variety of designs- which is primarily based in shapes and silhouettes. You could try to think of the design as a flat graphic shape- especially with rocks as the subject matter you have more freedom to modify the silhouette.
Anyway, rock portals are always a fun concept- thanks for sharing!
Hey @Josh Sunga! Thanks for the feedback, it is really helpful. Seeing your desings made me realize how monotonous mine is. I think I was too worried about making everything "right", then I ended up creating something not dynamic at all. Color still is something kinda new to me, I have to explore a lot more. In my next paintings I sure will use your advices and explore a variety of designs using different shapes. Again, thank you very much!
Nice concept, interesting shape and I like the vines. I'd say the comments below apply to the grass too, it's quite uniform in colour and style, so add some variation. Maybe try with the lighting coming from a different direction to see how that affects the composition?
Thanks for the advice! I need to put more variation on the base values before applying the gradient maps. I think that might help with the whole color variation problem that I'm having. More dramatic lighting is a nice idea too, I'll try to apply that on the next one!
What Peter said, plus, you could vary the colors in the rocks. You could change up the colors and the temperature to make it look more like an organic structure.
Yeah, that too. I need to put more feel to the textures and color variation. They ended up being "too smooth". Thanks!
I think it looks cool and has a good feel to it. Main thing is it doesn't feel like a portal since there's no magical energy in the center, unless you meant it to just be a stone arch, if that's what you meant by portal. I also think you could vary up the size of the rocks more (tiny, medium, huge). They could also use more weathering. I think it also might be too symmetrical in its structure.
Oh yeah, I forgot to mencion, it's the arch of a portal (not activated). Thanks for the tips! The stones are quite similar, I need to make something more varied for sure!
