Sketching during Flight to Mexico
3yr

I tried to encorporate the awsome feedback I got on my first post in these two sketches I did en route to Mexico on Thursday. We were in the frist row on the plane and the flight attendants saw me sketching and had very kind things to say. That felt pretty good :-) Anway, I can already see some things that are off in the sketch on the right. This was from an actual person/photo that had accompanying Loomis + Reilly heads so it was easier. In the one on the right, the nose and mouth are not in alignment. I'm not sure if the mouth is pushed too far to the right or if the nose isn't pointing in the right direction. I think I still got his ear a bit too far back. It looks correct on the structural drawing but not quite right on the other one. I am still not quite sure how to get the near-side cheek to look 3D and not flat. That is a common struggle for me. I do feel like the eyese are bit better than my last attempt. The photo was taken with my phone so not the greatest reproduction but hopefully good enough to critique. Also, I'm not sure what the rules are about posting and I don't want to be a nuisance. I tried to find some indication of what is considered "too much" but welcome any correction/instruction by moderators. Also, anything I post is always open to feedback. I am here to learn so any good-faith comments are always welcome.

This is a newer version done a few days later. I fixed some of the errors using the feedback I received. I tried to back off of the shading and focus more on the anatomy. Thanks again everyone.

It's looking a lot more realistic. It's important to remember that the planes that we learn with the Loomis method and such aren't literal interpretations of what the head is actually shaped like. Those methods are instead meant to help us learn about the forms and think about what they're like and where light will fall. Regardless, keep up the good work, I'm sure you'll continue to see improvement with all good study you're doing.

I think you're right! The structural drawing is great, but towards the lower half of the face on the right it goes differently. I think your lip line (between the two lips) went off at an angle, so although the lips are good, the angle has taken the jaw out of perspective a bit. In the structural one, the line is horizontal, but on the right, the line definitely tilts upward, and therefore the chin has as well. Great shading and lighting though!

Thanks for the feedback. Somehow I did not notice the perspective was off until I had done the shading. I need to try to step back from my drawings a bit before I go down a path I can't come back from. I did a subsequent version that is quite a bit better, I think.

I mean, it seems like ur doing the right thing, just keep going. althoug I would try to push the values a bit further/darker in the nosetrils, iris and between the lips. Good work!

Good call. I had not really intended to shade this to the point that I did but got carried away with no real destination. It shows, ha ha. Thanks for the feedback.
