Observing the Structure: A Design Study of a Classic Three-Wheeler

Bo Han Qiu
I was surprised to learn that early Vespa models had such a rounded and charming design—seen from the front, the shape of the front wheel reminded me of a penguin or a duck’s beak. I vaguely remember seeing a similar little blue three-wheeler in My Neighbor Totoro too. The structure of this vehicle is also quite fascinating—the rear trailer section can lift and rotate, making the design surprisingly flexible. While doing some research, I found out that it was created after World War II to address material shortages in Italy. It belongs to a category of lightweight, practical vehicles, and was often modified into mobile vending carts.
