[Looking for critique!] I tried to paint a face at an extreme angle from a stylized reference. It did not go well.

I'm not proud of this one. I think it's funny, and it was fun to do, but there's no way in hell I'd put this in a portfolio. I noticed that you could *kinda* tell the forms of the nostrils from this photo, making it at least *okay* reference. And so, with my mediocre understanding of facial anatomy, I got to work. I think my main problem is that I didn't look at the reference enough. I took quick glances, and didn't actually bring in the reference until late in the game. The left is the final study, the middle is the same but with a halftone filter (like the reference) and the right is the reference. What do you think?

Hey Jason, This is a really hard angle to draw, especially without a lot of info in the reference. The photo is also distorted, causing the jaw and mouth to look larger. What I did was apply a Loomis head to the problem, and worked out the general structure of the head and features. Once I have the structure in place, I can then think about adding all the details and getting likeness. For example, you had problems with the nose, so, if you think of it as a 3D shape sitting on the face first, then you can add the details to make it look more like a nose. I did a sketch that I hope helps you, keep drawing :)

The first thing you’ll want to make your life easier is definitely a better lit reference (preferably not filtered), like the ones provided by Grafit Studio or Proko Tools. This is super important so that you’re able to see all the facial features clearly and aren’t guessing where they are when you’re still learning. For steps on drawing the face, you might try the Loomis method. This will help you generally orient the skull and have some guidelines for where to place the facial features. There are some free videos on the Proko youtube channel that talk about this method.

What I'd like critique on is facial anatomy, and how exactly to go about learning it.
