How do I know where the horizon line (camera's height) is in a reference photo?

For example, in this reference photo, her head is dead straight toward the camera. So I assume the camera is as high as her head? But if so, shouldn't the socks and shoes have more obvious ellipse shapes around them?

I'd say, it depends on how far the camera is from her. If it is close to her, then yes. But if it is far, then no.

Hi, the horizon line is near the midwaist. for humans its best to avoid looking at the face as that can mess with where the real horizon line is. Hope that helps!

It helps a lot when there are things in the environment in reference images to determine the horizon line. I do know in fashion photography the camera is often positioned straight on at the waist. You can measure proportions to check for camera distortions. She is a tall lady but everything seems fairly proportional. There would be more distortion if the camera was at her eye level.

It's a little hard to tell, because her heels are causing her hips to lean forward and her shoulders to lean back. And her head is probably bent forward a bit. But to my eye the horizon looks to be about wasit level or slightly above.
