Head Studies

Critique is always welcome here! That said, I am posting the first image to get used to owning my failures as well as successes because I think people would benefit from seeing it all. I can tell I need to go back to practicing boxes in perspective since I still struggle to draw Loomis heads out of imagination. I am not good at accepting 'failed' attempts and I tend to grind until it gets good which is never a healthy way to think so I am going to leave them as they are and do gestures tomorrow as planned :)

Hi @Uku Kivisild, Really great studies!! I see that you already got some great feedback on the drawings themself, so just a bit of nitpicking perhaps from my side. But my feedback would be to make better quality photos (they are quite dark and a bit blurry) of your drawings, they really deserve it :) ! Cheers, Leon

Hey! I don’t have much feedback for you. You did great! For those extreme angles, try to envision the the cranium as a cube and the jaw as a box form beneath the cube. Again, nice job!

Looks like great practice! Have you tried to use the loomis head method and use it to draw someone from a reference? Maybe you're jumping in the deep end trying to use it to draw from imagination! I feel like drawing from imagination is such a hard skill, you need to have practiced these methods from reference over and over and over again to build up a solid base of knowledge you can draw from (for me personally anyway!). I know it's fun to just make stuff up, but I think working from reference makes such a huge difference, and you can learn so much with every new face.

Thank you, yeah that is true it usually is fine with references so just need to do more of those and practice boxes on the side. Thanks again for the feedback :)

Really, I think that if you're drawing at all your not failing. When the goal is to learn, every drawing and exercise is helping you get towards that goal, regardless of how it turns out. Doing something until you get it right can be a great exercise. But so can just doing something many times, even if it isn't completely perfect. And your drawings don't look too bad. I especially like the right eye on the shaded drawing on the third picture. It feels very 3d.

Yeah that is true, it's easy to assume all professional artist were born with their abilities so it can be difficult to just keep drawing when it doesn't come out like you wanted. But you are right, any drawing at all can be good for progress. Thanks for the feedback :)
