Figure linear lay-in
3yr
Maximilian Roth
Hello fellow students! Here's a linear lay-in of approximately 1 hour. I had difficulties capturing the legs and feet. Criticism and feedback is welcome! -Max

I love it! I would check the proportions of the chest and rib cage area. It reads well but I think that the anatomy doesn't quite work in that area. The core shadow on the leg hints at some anatomy as well that I think may need to be further defined for clarity.

Yeah, you're right. Seems like I should dig into anatomy for a second time. Haven't done anything related to this in a while!

Awesome job Max. This is really strong, not much to say about it other than it's really good. The one thing I might add is that (this might be personal taste) I think that adding a squash and stretch to her butt would go a long way. Right now it doesn't look like she's sitting on anything and the result is the impression that she's floating.

You're absolutely right! That would also accord with another critique about the not yet added cast shadow on the ground. I will get into that again.

I love the portrait lay-in. Very clear light/shadow mapping. The core shadow on the upper leg is a little intense, as Alex mentioned. However once the shadow is filled in with value you can easily bring that back into balance with more value context. Great job, especially for an hour.

Thank you! It's funny, because I took a first picture and had the feeling that the core shadow was too weak (at least in the picture). Seems like I've gone too far. But I'm gonna correct it once the tone is in there.

Agree with the others about some slight proportional issues, but I honestly really love this! Great work

Wonderful work mate! I'm thinking maybe you should add the figure's cast shadow so it doesn't just float there. Other than that I feel like her thighs are a bit shorter than they are supposed to, and her right calf is a bit thin. Lastly, there is a tangent on her left heel that messes up the silhouette a bit, maybe move one of the legs so we could actually see the heel. Hope I could help. Keep up the great work! :)

Thank you!! After posting it and your feedback, the proportional issues became apparent to me. And your second point was exactly the reason why I had problems finishing the feet properly, so again thanks!

Great work! The only two things I notice: The hair is a bit distracting, the line of the arm that goes through it. And the shading on the upper leg is just a bit too brutal, looks a bit like a pit in the leg.

Thanks! You're actually targetting one of my weak spots, which I'm glad you did. I just need to focus on the gestural and structural simplicity first - especially in the hair. I'm going to fill in the tone and probably going to adjust the core shadow
