Doing late Figuary
3yr
Dan B
So following on from completing the 100 heads challenge - which was really useful! - I've discovered a guided self-learn 'course' which I've started, to give my learning better structure and focus. Module 2 involves figure drawing through doing the Figuary challenge (Love Life Drawing), so here I go! While drawing people isn't my favourite area of interest, I think it's important because people are important parts of composition and story in most forms of art and I want to be able to add them when needed on a solid base of understanding, plus this will inform drawing other things anyway. I've done lesson one and here's my attempts at the Croquis Cafe poses aligned to Day 1 (1min -> 2min -> 5min poses). I'm not going to post up each day as to not spam the thread, but this is me making the commitment to myself and hopefully I'll post up in 28 days time with a review, with perhaps some posts along the way with insights.

Day 28, the finish line! Ok so I realised towards the end of this that drawing people does not give me the most inspiration so I got a bit rushed... I think some of the early Figuary days were a bit better because I was less concerned about getting to shading and I was getting just slightly stuck on light detail in the later lessons too. But, this exercise definitely helped me with proportion and simplifying, while also improving understanding of shadow shapes. Started to find it difficult at times to get consistent shading with the iPad, the brush strokes could vary a lot. In terms of the croquiscafe videos, my critique of those is that many of the poses are not at all dynamic (straight front-on/rear), but my main issue is the lighting was not great; often there were at least two moderately lit light sources making defining shadow shapes difficult, sometimes the light sources were also different temperature, further confusing things. More variety in models would be great too. Having live models that do multiple poses is excellent though and the video quality was decent. Glad to be finished this one to be honest, I more enjoyed the 100 heads challenge and I'm looking forward now to hooking into the drawabox lessons, which I have done some of previously.

Day 27: the penultimate. This has been good practice till now, though I'm not sure I've improved a lot I do feel I'm getting more consistent with proportions and perspective at least. I think with where I'm at with skill it's hard to fit in both the drawing and shading in one go so I have a few times taken an extra 30 seconds to do more shading. Last few days attached. I think I'll do a little summary post tomorrow with my learnings.

Day 21. The timed poses through croquiscafe are good for implementing the instruction, gestural -> form -> shadow shapes. Into the last week! My previous practice with Force drawing is coming in handy with these.

I like the simplicity of these gestures. Keep it up!

Day 17, good to be keeping fairly consistent. My primary focus is to stay loose and not get stuck in detail, but it's such a long-standing habit it's really hard to keep away from! Last few days work attached.

Day 13. It's nice again to have consistent practice and feeling a little progression. Adding shading shapes is fun and new.

Back at it... Day 11. Returned from holidays and back into the practice again now. This one was good as the accompanying lesson focused on shape design (or appreciation at least), which I worked into the 5 min pose. Hard to do on quicker poses as I'm not good enough to get the figure down and add shading shapes. Also worked in charcoal yesterday on paper, a nice change from digital work.

Up to day 7. About to go on holiday though with no iPad, so might not get much done over the next couple of weeks... Hopefully keep some Sketchbook practice going while away and get back into it once back. Day 6 here as well

Day 5. Hmm, something was going wrong with the Proko brush in Infinite Painter tonight, kept doing random line weight and pressure changes. Still finding the lessons making life harder for me than just going for my own process (which I went with for day 1), but this is probably because I'm still not awesome at measurement/proportion so I slow down more.

Nicely done. I love how you put wrapping lines on your gestures. Not everyone does them, but I find them super-helpful.

Day 3, kind of started properly today after not using the actual Figuary poses for the first two days. The lesson for this session was using simple shapes for torso/mid-section/hips, but I don't find it all that useful as it's very 2D. A neat measuring trick for checking, but I think it interferes with gesture. Anyway, today's poses attached.

Thanks! I realised after this I was using the 2019 Figuary poses, not 2021, so I've registered at Croquis Cafe now to get the 2021 set that aligns with the Love Life Drawing instruction videos. Probably could just use the older ones, but the instruction videos seem quite specific to the poses so I want to not confuse myself
