Character Design

Hey! I am currently putting a lot of my focus on improving my character designs and paintings, so I wanted to share my latest one. The topic I gave myself was "space pirates" so I started with the captain of the crew. I would really appreciate any feedback. : )

Hey @Jule Hollstein! Great work! It's nice to see your whole process. I really like the mechanical legs on the first one in the third image. I do think the design you picked could exaggerate the "captain" aspect. That said, I did a paintover focused on value structure for the last piece. I like the hollow design of the prosthetics and the scrappy feel the character has but I altered parts of it for the sake of clarity and movement throughout the costuming. But reworking the value structure is what really helps an image have a strong first read. Thinking about where to bring in more contrast or where to tone it down based on what you want the viewer to notice the most. I like the intense mood of your piece, but the dark shadow to the right makes the metal leg attract too much attention. I lessened the contrast there (knowing the cool design will bring itself attention anyway) and increased it near the head area- darkening the background and adding a stronger highlight to the helmet. I also toned down the highlight on the shoulder but increased the saturation of the skin tone so that it still pops. Also making the feet feel more grounded on the floor and keeping the legs consistent with the direction of the hips helps her feel more stable and also more confident by widening her stance. Hope the notes help! And again, great work!

Love all the ideas! Sketches look great - I think the painting is also amazing, but it's not quite there I think. Possibly it's the lighting, but the texture of the skin of the shoulder vs on the lower arm on the left side looks very different. Also because of how bright that shoulder is next to the background, that is where my eye is drawn, and it isn't the most exciting part of the image, so maybe play with where you want to draw the eye.

Hey Jule, The drawings are really nice, the poses and proportions are really good. I also like the ideas for costume and tech you are exploring. I think though that the painting is where you could use some more practice. In particular, you should use some reference of different textures, the way metal looks under your lighting scheme, how folds in cloth look. Sketches always look great, but when its time to paint them to completion, we have to look at reference to help solve a whole new set of design problems. I hope this is helpful :)

Thank you! : ) I'm not studying character design from a specific course. The prompt for this character is from a book called "Designing Creatures and Characters" though.
