Hi everybody, here is my result from the colour assigment. I switched from PS to Clip Studio Paint and I am missing some colour tools and tricks, but for most parts, I found some replacement. I used selfmade brushes and textures from (textures.com) for grain and stains. For the colours itself, I played around until I found something that got me excited. It came down to complementary colours and (hopefull) a lot of "pop"!. Really enjoyed these lessons, the videos, the inspiration - Thanks Scott for the Course, it is appreciated. Bye, Andre

Here are my silhouettes and a work in progress of my lineup :) I made a kind of wacky tomato gang. I spent a long time colouring it in photoshop and none of my results really worked. I had a lot of trouble with the atmospheric perspective. I am also new to photoshop so it was just an overall slog and after a couple of days I had to call it. I learned a lot though and I am going to go through the whole course again with some different prompts in mind and hopefully come to a more definitive end point. Really loved this course a lot and learned a huge amount. Also feedback very welcome :)

Hi Tara, those are some great shapes. If you have issues choosing colour which goes well together, you can google some colour combinations and relations and stick with one you like. I attached an example of what I meant (Keywords: color combination spooky). You can pick colour with the picker tool and use it in your drawing. Best wishes, Andre

Oh boy, this took longer than I thought. I went down a completely different road for 2 tries and scrapped everything before trying something else. Hide your money and your goats, here comes the infamous PUMPKIN BRIGADE! I had loads of fun and learned a lot. Thanks Scott. Feedback is appreciated :) Andre

Hello MonsterLab course followers, here are my shapes with additional shadows. I put in a slightly darker background to have some contrast for the smoke and magic. Best wishes, Andre

Hi MonsterLab people, I would like to share my silhouettes of my Pumpkin Brigade. Discovered some issues with the farmer in terms of readability around the head. I will try to work this out with the internal shapes in the next lesson. Have a good time, Andre

Spent a few days on and off drawing side views from Pinterest. Great site do just get a nice model suggested as you complete the drawing. Makes it easy to "keep going". I have problems drawing the circle by hand, and estimating the size of the inner circle. I see that once i used a tool to create the circles (last drawing) everything felt more correct immediately. My inner circles are usually too small, and i have some issues drawing minor details (it feels). Any tips / feedback appreciated. Thx.

Hey sark, your heads arent bad. Good job. I also have issues with drawing the inner circle at exactly 2/3 of the outer one. The more I concentrate on it, the more skewed everything gets. Keep in mind that the real models from instagram are not the exact loomis head in terms of proportion. So they will deviate a bit from the "perfect" measurement. I would suggest doing some generic heads where you measure the size of the circles and repeat it a couple of times until you feel more comfortable to get close to 2/3 without checking. Then mix it up with real heads, but this time concentrate on getting the proportions of the model right. If you are doing this digitally, you could overlay your drawing with the model to spot the differences. Besides, keep drawing heads heads heads heads. I started drawing heads with proko about the time the first videos popped up on youtube, and I am still getting better, and I am still drawing imaginary heads in my sketchbook for practice. For the features... phuu, that is more difficult. First I would suggest the videos in the heads course for the features. Knowing how they work is the first step. For the placement, I find it useful to know some basic structure of the underlying bone (skull). Especially for the eyeholes. Try to find some rhythm between the features. Orient yourself on the planes of the head and follow through with the underlying construction lines. The features are usually placed in accordance with these lines. Happy head drawing. Andre

After not touching this project for some time, I gotta say it was so much fun coming back to it with fresh ideas. For my next project, I think I’ll give myself tighter constraints on exactly what type of character I’m making.

Hi Blaise, maybe you want to post your line-up in the assingment section. Then your post will be marked as "Requested help/feedback". :) The fishermann folly seems like a fun and crazy troop. I liked your ideas. Andre

Hi Juan, I am too an engineer and working as artist/illustrator on the side. So I might see what you are trying to ask here.. I believe that the question "if you can make a living from arts" depends on many others things besides your skills as an artist. Your images show that you have knowledge and skills in creating art, if this can be used to make a living depends on other factors. What industry would like like to work for? Do you want to be employed or independent? As freelance artist you have to be as much your own business manager as you need to be a good artist (if not even more). Do you indent to switch 100% away from engineering to arts? What kind of lifestyle are you having? From my experience it is quite difficult to expect equal pay or income from art as you can on a regular basis from engineering - at least if you just jump into it. I think the basic thing to ask yourself should be: What do you (want to) offer and is there a sufficient demand to make it a living? Best wishes and a great art journey. Andre

Hi @Scott Flanders and fellow students, here is my current line-up. I updated the characters from the development stage with the exploration for the focal points. After the last feedback video (focal points), I did some more sketches and finally I merged two weaker characters (the leader and the tinker) into a new one. I had way more fun with the farmer and reduced the samurai theme to a point where I think it is acceptable.. Even though I preferred 5 characters in the line-up in terms of odd numbers, I had to admit that the material was not good enough. I scanned them and did some digital corrections. The blocked color in the background helps me to identify the shapes a bit better with the sketches. For the upcoming shapecarving I would like to change some details along the way. Some proportions, some gesture... this is really hard for me with the pencil. I am so used to flipping canvas and doing cmd-Z, especially when it comes to making final decisions. The Pumpkin Brigade is my thrown together mercenary troop, which gets the job done for the right amount of coin. Best wishes from my desk to all, Andre

Hopefully the resolution of the image divided in two parts is better. Proko seems to reduce the quality drastically for very wide images...

Hi @Scott Flanders, I took your feedback und reworked some of the characters I did for the thematic focal point exercise. I had two characters, which I never really got into (The leader/samurai and the tinker/wizard) and combined them into one. I took everything I liked about each and created the farmer. Thanks again and best wishes. Andre

@Scott Flanders I have a question for the assignment. I realized just now, that the assignment includes the updated characters as well. I somehow missed this part during the first view of the assignment video. Are the updated versions to be done on a new A3 sheet in pencil as well? Would this be another iteration to the chosen characters from the development assignment? Or should this be a digital mix and mash to test the explored focal points? I am unsure about how much time I am supposed to spent on piecing everything together... Are we not going to redraw the final characters digitally later from scratch, or is the goal to develop the pencils to an "almost done stage" where we transform the scans into a digital shapes? Maybe you can help me here and elaborate a bit on this question. Wishing everybody the best, Andre

@Scott Flanders Hey Scott, I got to push this question from above. Sorry for bringing it up again, but the videos following the assignment also did not really clear this up for me. After the development I cannot see the clear path through digitalizing and thematic focal points. I am somewhat confused about the process and transition from pencil to digital. We did the development of the characters and after that the exploration of details such as heads, arms, etc. The assignment here asks to include the explorations in details to the final designs, but the follow-up videos seem to jump this point, or am I missing something? Are the focal points only something to keep in mind during the shapecarving process? Best wishes, Andre

Hello everybody, I am a studend of the MonsterLab course by @Scott Flanders and I keep missing new content because I never recieve any notifications and new stuff/comments etc also does not show up under the notification icon. All boxes are ticked in my settings and I receive notifications for all kind of stuff but the MonsterLab course. Is there anything I am missing? Bye, Andre

@Scott Flanders I guess this could be one of my favorite assignments :) Is there a deadline for the critique video? I started with my focal point sheets but had to pause due to other work issues. I would like to take my time with these but also want to get a chance on being critiqued.

@Scott Flanders Hey Scott, thanks for so many great critiques. I was able to get something out of them even if mine wasnt included. Especially in terms of premature design "decisions". I have to say, I was not 100% sure about how far into the process we had to take it and added color basically just for fun :) In the last critique video I found it immensely usefull, that the video had steps or "bookmarks". It made it a lot easier to go through specific critiques I was interested in. I sometimes go back to certain arguments and if it is a 2h (the time you put in is appreciated!) video without breaks I have to skip through everything again. Looking forward to the next assignment!

This is the 1st one I decided to push a bit further, it's a hulking fungus monster who uses the faces of previous victims to lure humans and to consume them. I'll be posting the rest on a few days, had an unexpected trip that is delaying me . Really cool to see the variety of styles people can do.

I ended up trying to push the Honeycomb Golem, Mind Hive, and Buzz Saw concepts, with a couple versions of each. I could probably try pushing these further, doing a few more iterations (for the mindhive ones especially).
