This was by far my most embarrasing project to be honest, and it has definitely made me realize that one of my biggest weaknesses is shape design. I did so poorly on this project. I felt as if all of my drawings were flat and boring. I definitely got better by the end but even my final drawings which were the kingfisher and hummingbird were pretty bad. I would really really appreciate any advice please. I really want to improve on this. Thank you!

My god that was difficult. I don't even know if I learned much but it was still fun in a way. This was my first master study and it's a process I definitely want to do more of. The artist I studied was Rene Gruau, he was a fashion illustration artist who was relatively influential. On reflection, some of my lines were definitely a bit too thick, and of course, some of the proportions were off too, but I didn't want to just trace over his drawing (though I did use the liquify tool a bit). I am EXTREMELY proud of the hand area though, along with the chest area. I feel like I got the idea down super well. I would love anymore critique.

Man this one was dificult even without having to draw the Rhino. It was good practice because I've always really liked really thick line weight and drastic line weight variation so I've wanted to incorporate it into my style in the future. But determining the line weight based off of the light was especially dificult. I think the final products turned out well though and I hope to improve my line quality a lot in the future. The left one is grouping important areas. I grouped the entire body and also seperated the head slight from the rest of the body. The right one is based on the lighting.

No, just try to recreate the references to the best of your ability while remembering to use smooth strokes along with the CSI curves.

Alright, just finished all the sketches. The first one was the hand in digital but I felt as if it wasn't sketchy enough so I did it again with pencil on paper along with the other 2. My proportions for all the drawings were definitely off a little. I tried marking where the drawings would start and end but that didn't help that much. I'm very frustrated with the hand to be honest. Especially comparing myself with the other submissions I've seen I feel like I'm just missing something. Any advice would be appreciated.

That's amazing. Great line quality using the thicker lines on the outside and thinner inside. The perspective on the right shoe seems a bit off, and the laces don't exactly have that CSI character about them but the general drawing as a whole is great.

Alright so I did the snail after the boot and even though it's much simpler, I am much more happy with how it turned out because I actually finished it in a decent pace and I remembered to use CSI lines the entire time. This is also my first Proko project in digital. I still made sure to use my full arm as much as possible and I didn't use the line tool.

Man this project took way too long for a single assignment to be honest. It helped me realize that I'm not really that good at just sticking to one single drawing for an extended period of time especially to be very detailed. I spread the work over 2 days though I think the actual time I worked on it wasn't too long, but definitely longer than I would've liked. As far the result goes, I guess it's fine, but some of the perspective was hard to illustrate. I'll try the slug and see if that's any easier.

Alright, this is my second attempt after watching the demo and critique. I think I did better with finding certain shadows and also using better values, but it's still tough to differentiate between the lightest dark and the darkest light since I only used a mechanical pencil. Also, I made sure not to use any outlines this time and I think it looks much more realistic because of that.

Alright this is my attempt with a mechanical pencil, had a hard time with the values but just took a while and I got something decent down. The cast shadow is cut off because I ran out of space on the page but I did what I could. I am attaching 2 photos of the same drawing just under different lighting. This is pre demo I guess?

Hi Phoenixx, there is no set way to begin any art journey. It kind of depends on your approach and style of learning, as well as what you want to do with your art. I can tell you a little bit about what I did to start of and maybe it will be something you want to copy. I was drawing as a child and teenager but kind of lost sight of it during my years in High School and University. As an adult (over 12 years later), I kind of wanted to find the "fastest" way to improve. I have no time to loose after all. So, I looked into the fundamentals and assigned them a position in a hierarchy. Since I figured that structure is very important to make things look 3D on a flat surface, I gave perspective my undivided attention for a couple of months. An adventage of perspective is that there is a definite right and wrong. You either got the perspective right, or you didn't. So, I went over to drawabox.com and started from lesson 0 until I had completed lesson 4 or 5. I kind of grew tired of it and felt like I got what I wanted from it, and looked for the counterpart of structure, which is gesture, at least to me. Gesture is almost everything about feeling and movement. And I did that for quite some time until I was confident enough with it. I then continued with more structure and sign up for prokos anatomy course. I have just finished the lessons just a couple weeks ago. I am now quite confident in drawing people in interesting poses, but am very bad at putting on some clothes. So as a break, I kind of doodle characters with cacual as well as fantasy outfits for fun. If you are not confident with drawing the nude figure, just find some references with skin tight clothes, maybe in bathing suits or underwear. line-of-action.com has the option of only presenting you with covered models. After understanding structure and gesture enough for now, I want to dive into rendering, so everything that has to do with value, light and shadow. After getting comfortable with value, I want to continue with color. So, the way I structure my art journey and the fundamentals is the following: 1. Perspective (drawabox.com) 2. Gesture (Proko) 3. Anatomy (Proko) 4. Rendering with only value 5. Color I am not concerned with composition or acurate folds and clothing, textures etc. for now. I will go into those as I need to for the things I want to draw. This way, I will not get tripped up by exercises that I do not need immediately and keep myself from burning out. What do you want to do with your art? Do you want to draw characters or enviroments? Do you want to go into 3D Design? Maybe you want to draw your own comic. What is you end goal? Depending on the goal, the skills needed are very different and with it the importance of the different fundamentals. For example, if you want to draw enviroments and landscapes, you will not need to study anatomy. If you want to draw Manga or Comics, things like storytelling will have more importance over high level rendering skills. Maybe you want to clearify your end goal and we can figure out a path for you.

Hey, I'm new to actually trying to learn art and I don't know where to begin. Well first off I have a drawing tablet and know that I want to do digital and I have Krita, a free "photoshop alternative". I know there are fundamentals of art but I don't know what to learn first. I've watched some videos from not just Proko but other people too about drawing the head and figure drawing, and I've drawn a little but I'm not good by any means. I also don't know how to practice. I don't feel comfortable drawing something just for fun because I'm not good and I've tried starting gesture drawing, but first off, I don't know if I'm being productive or if I just suck, and second, there are not many free references for drawing. I know there's a free photo pack with some pictures actually, but tbh I'm not comfortable with them being nude... So all in all... what do I do?
