Live Shading Demo – Drawing Light on Form
In this live shading demo, I’ll show you how to use elements of light on form to depict a 3D object on a flat surface. I’ll also introduce how to simplify any complex form into its primary, secondary, and tertiary forms using the human skull as an example.
This demo also features answered questions from people watching the live stream. If you’re interested in learning more about shading, I recommend watching these tutorials: The Basic Elements, Shading Light & Form – Basics, and How to Shade a Drawing.

Hi Stan, thanks for producing the very useful video about shading techniques. Whether you could release some skull photos for members to further practice? Cheers.
If you have the premium portrait course, there’s 3d models of the female skull, male skull, and loomis head that you can position to any angle. The only issue is the 3d viewer doesn’t show cast shadows. I do have a link under the 3d models to download images of 86 angles of each model. Those images have cast shadows in them.
Here’s a sample of the downloadable images: https://s3.amazonaws.com/prokomisc/MaleSkull02.png
Just saw your reply. Thanks very much!
wow! a real time demo of stan’s way of shading! gotta learn a lot from this! ^_^ thanks for this!
i really have a hard time dealing with my charcoal.. it just dont blend like yours stan… thats why i always end up givin up on it and just use graphite instead..
I hope you can also create a a realtime tutorial using graphite medium! 😀
Such a great and easy explanation of easy / confusing terms … really appreciate the simplicity on your explanation. Cheers from Mexico
Hi Stan ! Recently I purchased the Strathmore 300 Series Smooth Newsprint, and I found that the paper has a lot of texture to it (I can’t feel the texture in hand, but when I put down a broad stroke, the stroke appears spotty), and I can’t really get a smooth tone because of that. Is it my skills or is it the paper that is causing the problem ? Thank you !
Check the cover of the newsprint and make sure it actually says smooth. Sometimes if you buy online, the title says smooth, but it’s not. For example, look at the link below. Title says smooth, but if you look at the image, it actually says “rough surface”.

But, it might also just be the brand. During the 10 years I was at Watts Atelier, the school changed their newsprint brand every few years because it would change. It’s smooth for a while, and then suddenly that brand changes their paper and it’s rough.
So, if the cover on the newsprint says smooth, not rough, then try another brand.
Thank you for the reply, Stan. Do you happen to know any alternatives to the Strathmore newsprint ? Thank you
yup, there’s Canson, Dick Blick brand, Uline, Reeves etc.. A google search will get you a lot of alternatives. As I mentioned in a previous comment, the quality of newsprint seems to change a lot. I don’t keep up with the quality of each at any given time, so you’ll just have to experiment.
