Hey Steve! What's your thoughts on learning to draw everything in imagination? Is this a good goal to set for, especially when you are learning to draw the human form. I want to master all the important ideas about the figure and have the ability to draw or paint figure like you do. But at the same time I want to draw like kim jung gi, freestylying anything imaginable. Do you personally practice drawing from imagination, or are mostly using reference? How would you go about breaking down a vague goal like this into actionable steps. Thank you!
LESSON NOTES
Set a clear goal, focus on the crucial steps, and adjust as you go. Take action fast, pay attention, and you'll see steady growth.

Use reference. Don't just copy an image as you see it. Try to break it down through multiple layers of lenses one at a time. That is, perspective, values, composition, and so on so forth. All of these fundamentals are covered in the Drawing Basics course here on Proko.
Artists like Kim Jung GI had a huge visual library to pull from to draw from, but the way they were able to do that is by having mastery of fundamentals. Mastery is a continuous process, not an end-point. All artists make mistakes. Sketch a lot and don't be afraid to get messy. You can solve all the problems when you get to them. Think about how we as humans learned to live on this planet. We had to learn and explore what was good and what was bad.
Lastly, the best thing you can do is set a small goal for yourself that is part of a larger project. For example, I want to make video games. I want to make this world that is cool to me but I need the player to be able to move around it in. That means I need to work on the movement. As Steve said though, it doesn't have to be perfect. Get it good enough and you can always come back and improve it when inspiration hits you.
