What to draw?

Hey! As the title says, I never know what to draw. It's not an art block or anything like that, I just struggle to come up with my own idea's or even as simple as " I think {insert Favorite Cartoon/Anime} is cool, let me go on and literally draw something I see " I've done prompts and stuff but i'd like to be able to just come up with my own ideas instead of using those things as crutch. Any advice? Thank you!

I have two suggestions. One is to draw objects or scenes around you from life - from simple objects in your home to urban sketching or landscapes or whatnot. And I think part of this is learning to be curious about those things, learning from them while you draw and also learning about where your drawing is at. Also maybe, deciding whether to change something, whether to leave out details, whether to sketch quickly or slowly - all of this is part of your art experience and what art is 'for' (as much as it's for the resulting artwork). Drawing this way frees you from thinking you have to imagine everything in your head before you draw it. The other suggestion is kind of in the opposite direction - I've started sometimes doing meditative drawing. If you have any kind of meditation practice, it's pretty simple: keep a sketchbook at hand while you meditate, and when an image comes to your mind, quickly sketch it, then go back to meditation. Don't worry about producing a great drawing - it's just about opening up to your subconscious store of ideas. There are no rules about what you draw. If you get some good things from this you can always develop them into more composed drawings later.

The meditation sounds cool, I have not done much meditating but have been interested in it. I usually start my "what am i going to draw" journey if you will. by looking around but nothing is all that interesting. I assume im not the only one who finds their living room not the most interesting place. Do you just go " The cup I guess" or is there a mindshift you do when choosing a "boring" subject to draw.

I personally get inspired when I read books. Forces my imagination to kick into gear and try to visualize the words on the page.

Hey Christopher. First off, there's no shame in using prompts if that gives you incentive to draw. Drawing is drawing, it doesn't matter how you go about it as long as you're having fun. As for your question, let me ask you something in return: what is it that gets you excited about art? What is something you're curious about trying/learning? What makes you go "I want to do that!" when you see another's artwork? What inspired you to pick up art in the beginning?

hey dan! thanks for the reassurance! I started some 20 years ago ( am in my 30s) but ive been on and off (more off than on ). When I started drawing it was " I like that cartoon, let me draw (copy) it!" I still get excited about shows I watch in the same way and often think "If I could do a fraction of that I would be happyy" whether as a hobby or career. What excactly gives me butterflies while im watching something- I don't know 😅
