I felt less focused towards the end , and overwhelmed by the sections that I didn't properly give a value to each
Nice job with proportions in this one. With portraits just like with drawing other objects, it's a lot easier to find the overall unified shape of the light area and the shape of the dark area before worrying about details. Of course, you still try to place those shapes with proper proportions.
Regarding focus, sometimes it's best just to put things down and come back later rather than letting impatience or lack of focus drive your drawing decisions.

I just watched the demo video and I think I get what you mean.
I am going to give it a second attempt but this time, simplify with straight lines, and worry about the main dark vs light, before splitting into seperate values.
