...Staaaaart the reaaactoooor... ...but first, I’d love some feeeeedbaaaaack. =P I think I bit off more than I could chew with this one. I’m not happy with a few areas, but I didn’t wanna keep spinning my wheels and getting frustrated so I decided to stop here and ask for some tips. The glistening, slimy look of the skin was pretty difficult, especially restricting myself to only the default soft airbrush in Procreate. The hair was also very difficult for me. I know there are hair brushes, but I feel like as a beginner I might miss out on learning how to deal with hair if I let the hair brush kind of do it for me, so I stuck to the soft airbrush. Any tips on the approach, choosing the right brush for the job, or any general feedback about it are much appreciated. 🤓

That's really cool! what stands out to me the most is the lack of hard edges and maybe you can use a hard brush in some areas and then erase with a softer brush and this was have a better control of the edges. You can also use a lasso tool for that and again erase if it's tooo hard/sharp edge. Hard /soft edges can help you control the focal point and make the painting more appealing in general, it also can create an illusion of depth, depends of how you do it. You can pick artistically where soft/hard edges feel best. Maybe there's a better way to do it but I do it intuitively. Best way is look at reference of masters or artists you like. By the way a hard edge doesnt have to be super sharp, you can use a super fluffy brush and then make it smaller to control the hardness. Or the opposite, can do the entire painting with hard brush and then make a relativly harder brushstrokes, so it's a matter of style. I hope it's helpful, I'm not an expert :P Keep up the good work

oh cool. I think you can artistically reimagine these references and change some things, even just small subtle changes to make it more interesting. Glad I could help :D

Thank you! I totally agree about it being too soft everywhere. I think the main issue is that I keep wanting to make portraits of characters from older movies, so all the reference photos I find are low quality and a bit blurry, so I end up creating it how I see it and I get something without enough hard edges. Then I get too intimidated to choose where to put harder edges so I just leave it the way it is. I’m definitely going to keep experimenting with adding my own hard edges or maybe using a different brush for that part of the process. It’s very helpful when other artists point these things out to me so thanks again! 😁

But now I see in your album other paintings that have more variety of edges. So keep going and experimenting :D

Thank you! Yeah, it’s absolutely in my top 10 favorites. I saw it as a kid and it blew my mind. I knew eventually I had to make a portrait of this little dude. Heheh

i really like this piece you really did a amazing piece of art the skin looks really nice and i think that it looks really solid... 😄👍👌 also from what i have leaned you do want stuff that is in the shadows to be less descriptive AKA more bleary 😂 so i think the hair is fine the way it is... if i was to adjust a few things it would be the fingers on his left hand the finger next to his pinky is more focused than the other fingers and his right hand looks maybe just a bit to big and the little divot under the nose right above the middle of the lip looks just a bit to bright maybe try to blend it a little bit better with some shading but other than that i think it looks incredible... if i could i would have all of your art up on my wall👍😄 i truly think that you will have a very bright future with your art keep it up cant wait to see whats next good luck 😉✌

Omg thank you! You’re too kind! 😅 I agree about all the things you pointed out. I was scared to paint the hands cuz I’ve never done that before and his are particularly unusual, so I saved them for last and by the time I got to them I was already in lazy mode. I’ll try to put more effort into the next hands I make. Maybe next time I’ll start with the hands when I’m hopeful and energetic, so by the time I lose energy, I’ll be on the parts I like painting and that will keep me going. 😏 Thanks again for the feedback and for the extremely kind words! 😄
