Ami learning to draw
Hi! I drew 3 box heads in different angles. I would like to know your approach on drawing from box head to human head. I would like to know that how do you manipulate the cube form to draw the cranium and jaw? Thanks!

Hi Ami! Glad you're really getting after answers here. The head is a tricky thing, but I can certainly share my thoughts on using boxes to draw heads. Keep in mind, there is no one single approach to this (as we can see from the other great team members chiming in!) But, I will note that no matter what you draw, or how, boxes can be really useful. The show direction, and angle. If the head was only ACTUALLY box shaped we would be good, but it has all these pesky curves. So what we have to do instead is use the box as a guide line. First step to do that is make sure that your boxes match how a head should look. I often put three lines on the "face" side of a box. One for just below the nose. One for the eyebrows and one for the hairline of the head. This helps me line everything up and make sure on eye isn't too high for example. Then I try to have the sides of the box be roughly square. Every head is unique and different, but if I can fit the head in that box, we are good to go.
As you learn more techniques and get more comfortable with the skull and head, your relationship with the box will get more sophisticated. You'll start to easily find the shapes in them, or skip the box all together, but keeping it in the back of your mind. You got this!
Let me know if you have any more questions!
