Not finished yet. Gonna go in with final details tomorrow like lashes and smoothing things out. Any critiques. I'm a noob. how am I doing? @everyone @Stan Prokopenko @Bradwynn Jones
Hi Matthew,
congratulation on finishing this piece, like Sonja said it isn't an easy one.
I think that the main problem in your drawing is that the features aren't placed correctly. And this is probably due to the fact that you haven't spent enough time on construction and measurement. You can think of these two stages as the foundation of your drawing, everything else will be affected by it. So it is essential to carefully build your heads in order to achieve likeness , otherwise you'll be forced to rely on guesswork. Hopefully this will be helpful. I can't say much about the shading as i know almost nothing about it.
I think you need to work on propotions . The best way to make your propotions accurate is using scale measurement technique .
Hi there! Great work!
Your facial features are slipping away a bit and it kinda makes the whole drawing confusing. I recommend taking a photo of your drawing and putting your reference over it with a lower opacity once in a while. It really helps you notice the mistakes and it helps you train faster :)
Here, I made a quick overpainting. Maybe it helps :)
Oh and also, try to work on your values a bit. I recommend starting with finding the darkest darks, which are usually the core shadows and the ambient occlusion, and then slowly work your way to the lights.
That is a really difficult reference imho and you did really well. The reference has some weird proportions with the extreme long neck, which makes it harder I think.
Just some basic tipps: block in the proportions of head, hair and neck, so you get the basic reference points proportional. Flip the paper upside down from time to time to avoid one sided tilt and to get a fresh view of the placing of all elements. Start with very light strokes and get heavier.
You could also try if it helps when you do the first sketch lines mostly in straight lines instead of curves. That helps to understand what is really going on with the forms. That might have helped with the neck for example.

Thank you. Yea I always struggle with finding good reference photos. I'm pretty much avoiding teeth and hands until I get more practice on them and tend to do front facing views so I'm trying to find good 3/4 Views but it seems I pick odd ones and dont realize it until others point it out. The one thing you said, that I struggle with is the straight line layin. I always end up trying to draw the form on initial layin. Thanks for the feedback!
Hi @Matthew Medeiros ,
Nice job working on this piece. Portraits are by no means easy to successfully pull off.
One thing I would recommend is overlaying your drawing over the photo in photoshop or other similar software to check your proportions. I have done so in the image attached below.
You can see by the areas circled in red there are some proportional issues with your lay in. I would recommend redrawing these areas before continuing with the piece. Hope this helps!

Hey thanks for taking the time of doing that for me. That's a pretty legit. Unfortunately I don't own a computer, maybe I can find a phone app I can do that with. Unlike that idea. I did actually decide to finish it tonight. I have having too much fun drawing
