Horse drawing for a flyer

Okay, I’ve never drawn horses before, and for my upcoming project I have to draw a rider on a horse for a flyer. I started studying horse anatomy about two weeks ago, and I’ve completely fallen in love with horses—what beautiful, loyal, and brave creatures they are. Listening to tavern music and learning to draw horses has been the best part of my days lately, but that still hasn’t guaranteed success or spared me from frustration. I’ve made a lot of bad drawings. Now I’ve gotten to this point… still not quite there yet. Any horse lovers or art lovers, please give me some feedback. Thank you.

Not bad, overall! Two things jump out, tho. In the centre of the horse's head is a dark marking. If it's meant as a star, that's fine, although the colouring would be white, not dark. If meant as an eye, it is too high and too close to the middle of the forehead. Heads in the different breeds of horses can have some variety, but as a rough rule, there is a sort of 'L' shape starting from the nostril up to the placement of the eye, and then upwards to the base of the ear. The head itself on a horse is a wedge-shape. The 2nd area of confusion for me was in the placement of the shoulders. The canter and gallop (gait shown in your sketch) means that one leg is pulled upwards first, then the other, and then the first leg is shot forward, followed very quickly by that second front leg. Long explanation, and it happens very fast, but what it means is that the 2 shoulder blades would rarely be exactly parallel, as you have drawn. As well, for a 3-D look, the front shoulder would be slightly larger than the one on the far side. Starting at the withers (high point, just before the saddle), there should be a triangle shape, or more of a pyramid actually. I usually start drawing the shoulder blades starting at the withers, and then drawing the shoulder blades as if they were a pyramid. I hope I didn't make things even more confusing.

Yes, thank you. I totally agree with you. Well the thing is, that is also about a technic. I draw now traditionally, so no ctrl z or moving things around. Yet I was struggling. Because I learnt to draw head separate, nostrils separate, ears separate, body separate and legs separate. And with tracing paper or using a window I kind of glue it together. Well this project is also about the process and I am still searching what is the way. I do not know. Maybe it is ,,better, to draw it all at once together. Anyways. I see proportions are off and yes. It is early stage of a noce horse drawing. I do not give up. I made these gestural drawing and will focus more on proportions before jumping i to planes. And details. I want to have a nice horse in the end in this pose. Please. Any comments are very welcomed. Thank you

The first thing I noticed was the difference in line quality between the head and neck area and the rest of the body, which is strange in my opinion. Other than that I'd recommend not to focus this hard on the contour. Instead I would try to understand the structure or construction of the horse. How can the threedimensional form of the horse be simplified into simpler forms? How does the anatomy relate to the simple forms you've found in the first step?
