It looks pretty good. It just seems like the back of the head needs to go out a little more. It kind of makes it seem like there's a dent in the head. On Stan's picture the hair does go in a little on the head, but overall there's the impression of a curving line that sweeps from the top of the forehead to near the bottom of the hair. Capturing these bigger shapes and gesture is more important than getting every detail. You can also consider whether a roughly spherical volume would make sense under the hair.

Hey, @Anubhav Saini! These are very good! Your study of Stan’s drawing has a nice tone work and suggests a solid sense of volume. I think you did pretty well with it concerning these aspects. There are two things I’d say you could notice as something to pay attention to though: 1) Some edges could look softer. On the shadow area to the left, for example, I see a very crisp, linear separation between the darker value near the ear and the middle value more towards the back of the head - this is an area where the edge could be smoother so that these values would blend together some more; and 2) Texture! Your study is very solid in terms of value and volume, but I feel like you may have missed the last step, which is adding the sense of texture. Maybe this wasn’t in your goals for this study and you didn’t add texture on purpose - if that’s so, that’s fine! You have total autonomy to focus on just one part of the process if that’s what you need for that moment. Just keep in mind that if texture was something you skipped unintentionally, it could be interesting to perhaps include it in future studies you might make. And I think the same observations apply to the photo study: edge work and texture. As for the early stages of the process (form and major values), I’d say you’ve been doing good with the photo study too. I’m curious to know if you ever got to finish it - if so and if you want, I’d love to see a later version of it in case you might want to post it here too. That’s it, hope this helps! If you have questions or thoughts, feel free to let me know. Kepp up the good work 👍🏻

If you’re worried about it looking flat, try making the values in your shadow area darker. If it helps, try to focus on the darkest value on the reference image, and once you establish that, it should make it easier to see where you can darken further elsewhere. This is really nice, and your handling looks great!
